Tracks tops Android Apps of the Week

This week brings us lots of variety, from great social photo sharing apps like Tracks, to the continued impending enslavement of the world by Google with Google Calendar. We've also got a new RSS Feed reader in NewsBlur, the latest iteration of the Dolphin mobile web browser, and a really unique way to find music for your next rave! Here are this week's top Android apps.

Tracks is basically another one of the many attempts to fuse social media and photo sharing, but in a pretty novel way. You can create shared photo albums with your friends, upload photos to the same album, which the developers dub a "track." Lots of the standard social networking features make an appearance, but there are also Joinable Tracks, which are public photo albums centered around a specific topic, or Magic Tracks, which pull photos from your device and group them into albums automatically. It's a nifty new app worth checking out.

Another one of the Google staple features gets a mobile sibling, and Google is that much closer to world domination. They even released Zagat just a few days before this! The official Google Calendars app allows you to do the standard stuff, like creating and editing events, and quickly emailing event guests customized notifications. You can also view all your calendars at once, even from non-Google calendar services. This formerly device-specific app is finally available for all the public, though with some expected draw-backs. For example, the app does not work on several devices. But Google is hard at work on fixes, as always.

Speaking of Google, NewsBlur offers a similar service to a Google app, providing an alternative for consumers. In this case, it's an alternative to the RSS Feed news spewer that is gReader. You can import your previously existing gReader feed directly into NewsBlur. There is also some social connectivity to be found, as you share and comment on the news with friends or meet new people with similar interests as yours. The app is missing a few features so far, but it was very successful on iOS, and the developer is quite responsive, so you can expect lots of improvement.

Dolphin Browser has been a very popular alternative mobile web browser for quite a while now, with several different versions and many satisfied customers. Now, the latest iteration hits Google Play, and it's all about speed. Using Dolphin's own HTML5 rendering engine, Dolphin Jetpack seeks to deliver the fastest web-game/app experiences out there. People are confirming that it is indeed faster than most of the competition, and it already has the added benefit of being based on an established browser with a streamlined design and an intuitive interface. Anything beats that standard Android browser anyway, so you should definitely upgrade. Happy browsing!

This is a very unique music discovery app with a very specific audience in mind. Specifically, it targets fans of electronic music. Unlike Pandora Radio or similar apps, you don't explore by inputting artists that you already like. You start off by selecting a certain number of beats per minute, and from that a web of songs and artists springs forth, always expanding as you explore. It's very novel, and generally interesting to mess around with even if electronica isn't really your bag. It gives you much more of a sense that you're actually exploring and discovering, which is awesome. Just make sure you switch the language to English from the options menu.

Secrecy surrounds Ukrainian president's home

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? When Ukraine's president opened up his home to TV cameras, he presented a cozy place with a small office just big enough for his grandchildren to play in. But his critics point to strong evidence he actually lives in very different digs: a luxurious, marble-columned mansion with a golf course, a helipad and even an ostrich enclosure.

The reported grandeur is becoming a campaign issue in a country quickly getting fed up with widespread corruption. Critics call Viktor Yanukovych's home an emblem of the secrecy and arrogance that defines his presidency, painting him as a leader who basks in splendor while his main political opponent, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, is locked up in prison on charges the West has called politically motivated.

Yanukovych has refused to answer questions about the house or the vast park where it sits, once darkly suggesting that an investigative journalist back off. An opposition activist looking for answers broke into the property James Bond-style, scaling the walls with a tow rope. She was detained, but still managed to salvage photographs of a golf course and glitzy buildings, describing an opulent palace guarded by heavy security.

Political commentator Vitaly Portnikov, who has compared Yanukovych's government to a "mafia" jeopardizing Ukraine's desire for greater integration with the European Union, cited Yanukovych's clandestine residence as an example of the corruption and lack of transparency unacceptable in the West.

"Viktor Yanukovych's main goal is not to be the president of Ukraine but to be the No. 1 oligarch in Ukraine," said Portnikov. "He fought for power ... specifically in order to consolidate in his hands a huge amount of resources and property, in order to make his family the first family in the country."

The two main opposition parties are likely to gain ground in Sunday's parliamentary election. But with the pro-Western opposition's charismatic leader in jail and a lack of unity among government critics, the president's Party of Regions is expected to retain its majority in Parliament.

Yanukovych, who returned to power in 2010 after a period out of office, maintains a strong core of support, especially in the Russian-leaning east and south of the country, claiming credit for bringing stability after years of paralyzing political infighting and economic free-fall.

But his democracy and reform record is poor. TV channels, the main source of information for Ukrainians, are controlled by tycoons loyal to the government and they give little airtime to the opposition. Investors complain of being stripped of their companies through unfair legal action brought by government-friendly businessmen. And Ukrainians are angry over perks and unfair treatment for VIPs: Officials and their friends routinely run red lights or avoid traffic by driving the wrong way. In one case that sparked national protests, two of three suspects in the brutal gang rape and murder of a teenage girl were initially released ? because of their connections to local officials, activists say.

Yanukovych's home is in Mezhygirya park, 140 hectares (345 acres) of forested hills situated along the Dnipro River, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) north of Kiev, the capital. Founded decades ago on the ashes of an Orthodox Christian monastery, the park included a government residence for top Communist Party bosses like Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, and is off limits to the public.

Through a series of controversial government acts, Yanukovych was able to privatize a modest house on a 1.8-hectare (4.4-acre) plot of land inside the park. After that, two firms were allowed to lease the park from the government for 49 years. They demolished most of the Soviet-era buildings, including the government residence, and began construction of new houses and sports clubs.

Yanukovych has refused to say who is behind the two firms, but his critics have no doubts.

Mezhygirya is "a symbol of the president's inappropriate desire for luxury, the unknown source of his wealth and the desire to hide it all behind dummy firms," said Serhiy Leshchenko, a journalist with the Ukrainska Pravda news site whose investigation has linked the two firms to Yanukovych and his family.

Seeking to counter criticism, Yanukovych invited six trusted journalists to Mezhygirya in the summer of 2011 and gave them a tour of his official house. He led the men into his bedroom, where an Orthodox Christian icon stood on a bedside table, and then his small office, where he lets his grandchildren play while he works. He also showed them a fireplace in the living room he said he had to abandon because a family of owls had settled inside.

But ownership documents for the two firms uncovered by Leshchenko link them to Yanukovych and his allies and bolster claims that he controls the entire estate. Aerial photos taken by the Korrespondent weekly magazine show that the property appears to be one entity, complete with a giant mansion, fruit and vegetable greenhouses and an array of sports facilities. Journalists who have tried to get into the park or even a nearby village have been stopped by government security agents.

Investigative journalist Tetyana Chernovil scaled the 5-meter (16.5-foot) fence with a rope and a wooden plank, spending about three hours inside before getting caught by security guards with barking dogs. She was able to see the ostriches and photograph the golf club, a large barge made of rare red wood and plated with gold, and other buildings, before being released after several hours of questioning.

Chernovil, who is running for parliament on the opposition ticket, questions the source of all this luxury given that Yanukovych's official annual salary is about $115,000 a year. She is infuriated at the lavish spending in a country where some rural schools still have no indoor plumbing.

When "small kids are forced to run to the toilet outside in the winter, how can a president allow himself to . build these helicopter pads, which only he needs, which no one else uses?," she asked.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequences of ancient New Zealanders

In a landmark study, University of Otago researchers have achieved the feat of sequencing complete mitochondrial genomes for members of what was likely to be one of the first groups of Polynesians to settle New Zealand and have revealed a surprising degree of genetic variation among these pioneering voyagers.

The Otago researchers' advance means that similar DNA detective work with samples from various modern and ancient Polynesian populations might now be able to clear up competing theories about the pathways of their great migration across the Pacific to New Zealand.

Results from the team's successful mapping of complete mitochondrial genomes of four of the Rangitane iwi (tribe) tupuna (ancestors) who were buried at a large village on Marlborough's Wairau Bar more than 700 years ago will be published online in the prestigious US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Study director Professor Lisa Matisoo-Smith explains that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is only inherited through the mother's side and can be used to trace maternal lineages and provide insights into ancient origins and migration routes.

"We found that three of the four individuals had no recent maternal ancestor in common, indicating that these pioneers were not simply from one tight-knit kin group, but instead included families that were not directly maternally related. This gives a fascinating new glimpse into the social structure of the first New Zealanders and others taking part in the final phases of the great Polynesian migration across the Pacific."

The researchers discovered that the four genomes shared two unique genetic markers found in modern Maori while also featuring several previously unidentified Polynesian genetic markers. Intriguingly, they also discovered that at least one of the settlers carried a genetic mutation associated with insulin resistance, which leads to Type 2 diabetes.

"Overall, our results indicate that there is likely to be significant mtDNA variation among New Zealand's first settlers. However, a lack of genetic diversity has previously been characterised in modern-day Maori and this was thought to reflect uniformity in the founding population.

"It may be rather that later decimation caused by European diseases was an important factor, or perhaps there is actually still much more genetic variation today that remains to be discovered. Possibly, it may have been missed due to most previous work only focusing on a small portion of the mitochondrial genome rather than complete analyses like ours."

Professor Matisoo-Smith and colleagues including ancient DNA analysis expert Dr Michael Knapp used Otago's state-of-the-art ancient DNA research facilities to apply similar techniques that other scientists recently employed to sequence the Neanderthal genome.

"We are very excited to be the first researchers to successfully sequence complete mitochondrial genomes from ancient Polynesian samples. Until the advent of next generation sequencing techniques, the highly degraded state of DNA in human remains of this age has not allowed such genomes to be sequenced," she says.

Now that the researchers have identified several unique genetic markers in New Zealand's founding population, work can begin to obtain and sequence other ancient and modern DNA samples from Pacific islands and search for these same markers.

"If such research is successful, this may help identify the specific island homelands of the initial canoes that arrived in Aotearoa/New Zealand 700 years ago," she says.

This research is the most recent output from the Wairau Bar Research Group, a collaboration between Otago researchers and Rangitane-ki-Wairau. The Otago research team is led by archaeologist Professor Richard Walter (Department of Anthropology and Archaeology), and biological anthropologists Associate Professor Hallie Buckley and Professor Matisoo-Smith (Department of Anatomy).

Background information

First excavated over 70 years ago, the Wairau Bar site is one of the most important archaeological sites in New Zealand because of its age and the range of material found there.

It is the site of a fourteenth century village occupied by some of the first generations of people who settled New Zealand. The material excavated from the site, most of which is now cared for in the collections at Canterbury Museum, provided the first conclusive evidence that New Zealand was originally settled from East Polynesia.

This discovery was first reported to the New Zealand public in 1950 by the late Dr Roger Duff, Director of Canterbury Museum, in his book The Moahunter Period of Maori Culture. The principal evidence for his conclusions was in the artefacts found; however, the site also contained a large number of human burials.

Between 1938 and 1959 a total of 44 graves were excavated from the site and the grave contents taken to Canterbury Museum for study. For many years Marlborough Iwi (tribe), Rangitane, sought to have the remains repatriated so they could be reburied in the site and an agreement was reached with Canterbury Museum.

The reburial took place in April 2009, following earlier archaeological investigations of the site undertaken in collaboration with Rangitane.

A University of Otago-led multidisciplinary team of scientists have been analysing tooth samples recovered from the koiwi tangata (human remains) of the Rangitane iwi tupuna (ancestors) prior to their reburial. This work includes studies of the diet and health of the tupuna.

Of the 19 burials screened for DNA preservation, four provided sufficient sequence data for inclusion in the current study. These included the remains of two young to middle-aged females, a young adult male and a young adult female.

The researchers will now proceed with discussions with Rangitane about further genetic studies based on the samples already processed.

Traditionalists expel Holocaust-denying bishop

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? A traditionalist group of breakaway Catholics on Wednesday expelled a Holocaust-denying bishop whose views sparked a major Vatican crisis in 2009.

The Society of St. Pius X said its governing council expelled Bishop Richard Williamson because he ignored a deadline to "declare his submission" to its authority and had called for the society's superior to resign.

A spokesman for the group said Williamson's comments about the Holocaust were part of the reason for his expulsion.

In a 2009 interview with Swedish TV, Williamson denied that any Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers.

The comments earned him a criminal prosecution in Germany, where Holocaust denial is a crime, and caused great embarrassment to German-born Pope Benedict XVI, who had lifted Williamson's excommunication from the Church on the day the interview was broadcast.

But Williamson also angered the group's superiors by posting attacks against them on a blog that was "full of crude ideas" and by performing sacraments despite being forbidden to do so, said the spokesman, Andreas Steiner. "The third thing, which was key, was that he always criticized the talks with Rome (the Vatican)," Steiner told The Associated Press.

The Society of St. Pius X was founded in 1969, opposed to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. In 1988, the Vatican excommunicated the group's founder and four bishops ? including Williamson ? after he consecrated them without papal consent.

Razer DeathStalker Ultimate

Premium bells and whistles are expensive under any circumstances, but when it comes to gaming equipment, those extras are sometimes pricey enough to cost an arm and a leg even when paired with middling core features. Case in point: the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate . Headlining with the same Switchblade touch-screen interface seen on the Razer Blade (2012) , the DeathStalker Ultimate is considerably more expensive than most premium gaming keyboards (at $249.99), in spite of its crummy keys.

Design
While many of the high-end gaming keyboards we review feature mechanical switches, the DeathStalker Ultimate uses chiclet keys with scissor switches?the same style used on the Razer Blade laptop. While this provides slightly more tactile response than plain membrane switches, the typing experience is a bit mushy, with very shallow key travel.

The chiclet style keys are backlit, but even though the default backlight color is Razer's trademark green, the backlight can be adjusted to nearly any color in the rainbow, unlike the single color backlight of the Roccat Isku Illuminated Gaming Keyboard . The only problem with the backlight is that it doesn't show up well under regular lighting conditions, and when the backlight is turned off, the transparent lettering blends into the black of the keys enough to make it hard to read. Speaking of hard to read, the DeathStalker's keys are etched with the same stylized block font used on the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2013 Elite .

With a built-in wrist-rest, similar to that seen on the Roccat Isku, the DeathStalker Ultimate is fairly wide. Though the keyboard measures 1.25 by 20.5 by 8.5 inches (HWD), the DeathStalker Ultimate has no traditional 10-key number pad. Instead, where the number pad would normally be found, you will find Razer's Switchblade interface.

Switchblade UI
There are also several apps included with the Switchblade UI. In addition to basic touchpad functionality, the Switchblade touchscreen doubles as a 10-key number pad, switching between the two with the press of a button. Using other apps, the Switchblade serves as a portal to mobile versions of YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and a Web browser, all displayed through its own small screen. Other apps include a clock and stopwatch, a screenshot button, and buttons to record macros and activate gaming mode.

Testing the YouTube App (with Deadpool Vs. Gangnam Style, naturally) I found that the little 4.3-inch display is perfect for YouTube videos, so long as you don't need to watch what's on screen while typing or doing anything else. The display is pretty far removed from monitor, so you'll be glancing down at your keyboard every time you want to watch it. For gamers, the real utility will be the fact that a player can pull up a walkthrough video to watch as they play on their monitor. It also seems to be perfect for TED Talks and the like, which seem to be best played in the background, with the occasional glance at a visual-aid.

Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter apps facilitate online communication, even while in game. During other tasks, it's still helpful to have a separate display for your Gmail inbox or for following Twitter feeds. And the Browser app is excellent for pulling up information without interrupting whatever task or game you have up. That said, it's far from perfect. The text is small enough to be difficult to read, and interacting with these apps can be a bit frustrating, with small text links and the so-so accuracy of the touchscreen combining to make navigation difficult. It's also problematic when trying to follow a link, as the link opens on the small display. It could easily be improved by simply sizing up the default text, and providing the option of opening links on your monitor.

Gamer-centric tools, like the Macro Recorder and Gaming Mode buttons, are a bit more useful than basic hotkeys. The Macro Recorder pops up controls to start and stop recording keystrokes, while the display lists all of the keystrokes made and lets you edit as needed. Gaming Mode lets you toggle gaming mode on and off, as well as popping up a menu of options to determine which keys and keystroke combinations to disable and which to keep active.

Features
In addition to the Switchblade interface, the DeathStalker Ultimate also uses Razer's cloud-based customization and syncing tool, Razer Synapse 2.0. Downloaded for free from Razer's website, Synapse lets you create profiles for any of your Razer devices, including recorded macros, remapped key functions, and settings for backlight color. These settings can then be saved and used on another computer simply by signing into your Synapse account. Packaged in with Synapse is the software package for the Switchblade interface, making it easy to set up the DeathStalker on another system.

Performance
The DeathStalker is made for gaming, so naturally we tested it in its native environment, with a few healthy rounds of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Team Fortress 2. The chiclet keyboard may not offer the same response and comfort of a mechanical keyboard, like the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate (2013) Elite or the Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90 , but it served just fine in the heat of battle. And the Switchblade interface adds a new element to gameplay, with game data and macro recording available on the fly, and without interfering with your game. While there are some rough spots to work out with the Switchblade, and the keyboard would benefit from a shift to mechanical switches, the DeathStalker Ultimate is still a solid performer.

The final question mark for the Razer DeathStalker Ultimate is price. At $249.99, the DeathStalker is twice as expensive as the Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90, and as expensive as a standalone gaming console like the Sony Playstation 3. We've seen one other gaming keyboard with its own display, the Mad Catz S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 Gaming Keyboard , and it is actually more expensive, suggesting that this is simply the cost of entry for gamers who want this sort of secondary display.

For gamers who want to experiment with Razer's Switchblade interface without having to pony up the money for a Razer Blade laptop, the DeathStalker Ultimate is the way to go. For those who want a more traditional keyboard, but still want premium gaming features, our Editors' Choice Corsair Vengeance K90 is still the best option out there.

Epoxides are highly reactive organic compounds comprised of a triple ring with two carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. Among other things, the chemicals industry uses them for the production of lubricants for vehicles and engines, as well as surfactants and emulsifiers for detergents and cleansers. Until now, epoxides have been based primarily on source materials procured from petroleum. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB have engineered a chemical-enzymatic process that now enables vegetable oil-based production, at lower temperatures and under more environmentally-friendly conditions.

The Fraunhofer Center for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes CBP in Leuna has made this technology ready for industrial application. Starting October 2012, the findings obtained in the laboratory will be scaled up to an even larger volume. Quantities of up to 100 liters will be possible at the new center. That corresponds to a 70 kilogram-batch of epoxides. In the laboratory this reaction yielded batches only in the grams range. The 14 partners in the "Integrated BioProduction" project will be working until April 2014 on engineering a process for procuring epoxides, made from domestic vegetable oils, for industry use.

Using by-products from the food industry

The foods that are suitable for epoxides production include, for example, the oils of mustard, elder seed, crambe (Abyssinian cabbage) and dragonhead. To some extent, these oils emerge from food production as by-products, but are not themselves used as food. The epoxide is procured in Leuna from fluid oils, or fatty acids as well, with the aid of chemical-enzymatic epoxidation. In contrast to the established, pure chemical variety, the enzyme lipase here catalyzes peracid, the epoxidation medium. The main benefits are that the enzyme is easier and more efficient to handle. In comparison to many other chemical reactions, they operate at moderate temperatures, at neutral pH values and under normal pressure. At the same time, the enzymes conduct the epoxidation only on the designated sites in the molecule, and without side reactions.

"Even if the petrochemical process can never be completely replaced the potential for sustainable raw materials in the chemicals industry is immense. In 2009, roughly 14 million tons of vegetable oil was used for chemical-technical products, compared to about 400 million tons of mineral oil in the same year. To reduce the dependence on petroleum and carve out potential savings in CO2 equivalents, the industry needs ultramodern biorefineries. In Leuna, we are creating just the right processes for this," explains Dr. Katja Patzsch, group manager for biotechnological processes at CBP.

The "Integrated BioProduction" project

The project "Integrated BioProduction" is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection BMELV. The spotlight of the research activities is on increasing the use of sustainable raw materials primarily domestic plant-based oils for production of synthetic components for the chemical industry. In the first phase, which ends April 2012, the researchers selected and evaluated relevant plant oils, developed and tested chemical and biotechnological conversion processes on the laboratory scale, and identified suitable catalysts. In the second phase, scheduled until 2014, the focus shifts to optimization and the adjusting selected processes to a scale that is relevant to industry; here, the Fraunhofer Center CBP acts as the interface. Starting October 2012, the large-scale facilities and processes will be tested in conjunction with project partners Addinol Lube Oil GmbH, Dracosa AG, DHW Deutsche Hydrierwerke GmbH Rodleben, Taminco GmbH, Umicore AG & Co. KG, Linde Engineering Dresden GmbH, Eucodis Bioscience GmbH, Thringer Landesanstalt fr Landwirtschaft (Agricultural Institute for the State of Thringen), InfraLeuna GmbH, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT.

So you want the performance of a new-fangled SSD with the extra storage of a good 'ole HDD? Apple has you covered with Fusion Drive for its new iMac. Unlike existing standalone hybrid drives the company is apparently "fusing" together a separate SSD and HDD with custom software in Mountain Lion. Better yet, the OS and all the pre-installed applications live on the SSD by default, while your documents and media reside on the HDD. This sounds similar to the software RAID functionality in OS X, but cranked to the next level. Stay tuned for details as we find out more.

Nintendo's Wii U isn't the only gaming console launching this holiday -- portable Neo Geo hardware is arriving on December 6, and it's called the Neo Geo X. The somewhat pricey handheld is now available for pre-order, and incentivizing that pre-order is the promise of an extra game (ADK-developed fighting game Ninja Master), bringing the total of pre-loaded game software to 21 titles. This "limited edition" version still costs the same $200 that the normal version does, and it still comes with the same variety of supplementary hardware we've seen before (that $130 standalone remains date-less, sadly).
