Wall Street falls, eyes banking contagion (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks fell on Wednesday, with selling accelerating late in the session on more warnings about the potential impact of the euro zone's debt crisis on the global economy and the banking system.

Worries about growth weighed on sensitive sectors like financials and materials. Losses deepened after ratings agency Fitch said even though the outlook on the U.S. banking industry is stable, it could worsen if the euro-zone's debt crisis is not resolved quickly.

Earlier, Moody's cut ratings on various German public sector banks, citing a lower likelihood of external support if it were required.

Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey, cited both rating agencies' moves as catalysts for the sharp selloff in late trading.

The S&P financial sector (.GSPF) fell 2.5 percent and the KBW capital markets index (.KSX) dropped 3.6 percent.

Fears are growing that the euro zone's crisis is moving to economies that had been considered more protected from the problems. The yield spread of 10-year French government bonds over their German equivalents widened to a euro-era high.

The Bank of Japan voiced concern about possible negative effects on Japan's growth from Europe's debt crisis, while England's central bank slashed its growth forecasts.

Markets sagged overnight as investors reacted to rising yields overseas. The concern is that euro-zone leaders will be unable to enact reforms to reduce debt and promote growth. The U.S. equity market's swings have become increasingly tied to gyrations in European credit markets.

About 7.4 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, below this year's daily average of 8 billion shares.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) lost 190.57 points, or 1.58 percent, to 11,905.59. The Standard & Poor's 500 (.SPX) fell 20.90 points, or 1.66 percent, to 1,236.91. The Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) dropped 46.59 points, or 1.73 percent, to 2,639.61.

Among declining stocks, computer maker Dell Inc (DELL.O), missed quarterly revenue estimates and its shares fell 3.2 percent to $15.13.

Rambus Inc (RMBS.O) shares tumbled 60.6 percent to $7.11 after the company lost an antitrust trial against Micron Technology Inc (MU.O) and Hynix Semiconductor Inc (000660.KS).

Micron shares jumped 23.4 percent to $6.74.

Shares of Abercrombie & Fitch Co (ANF.N) slumped 13.6 percent to $48.10 after the teen clothing retailer's quarterly profit missed estimates by a large margin.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a ratio of 16 to 5 and on the Nasdaq more than eight stocks fell for every three that rose.

Galaxy Nexus inches ever closer to Verizon stores

Verizon Galaxy Nexus

This is way, way inside baseball, but what we've got here is a look at a whole mess o' Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones en route to Verizon. This gives us absolutely no idea of when -- or if, actually -- we'll see phones in stores (presumably an order like this means in-store sales, and not direct fulfillment only), but it's yet another step in the process, no?

Thanks, anon!

Actress suing IMDB for posting age is selfish, website says (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A 40-year-old actress who sued the Internet Movie Database for posting her real age is "selfish" and is trying to perpetuate a fraud to make potential employers believe she is younger than she is, the website says in a motion to dismiss her lawsuit.

The actress, who filed the suit last month under the name Jane Doe, is seeking $1 million from IMDb and its owner, Amazon.com. Her attorneys said in the suit that "youth is king" in Hollywood and that exposing her true age could cost her movie and TV jobs.

In a filing last week, the company fired back that the actress' attempts to hide her true age amount to fraud, because she is trying to mislead studios and audiences. Her original filing fueled a debate about ageism and privacy rights, and the aggressive response will only add to it.

"Truth and justice are philosophical pillars of this court," the motion reads. "The perpetuation of fraud, even for an actor's career, is inconsistent with these principles. Plaintiff's attempt to manipulate the federal court system so she can censor IMDb.com's display of her birth date and pretend to the world that she is not 40 years old is selfish, contrary to the public interest and a frivolous abuse of this court's resources."

The site also asked that the plaintiff's identity be revealed to help it defend itself in the lawsuit.

Such a revelation would no doubt embarrass the actress, as it would not only make her real age even more widely known -- and show that lengths she went to in an effort to conceal it.

(AP) ? Quincy Acy and Quincy Miller sparked a second-half run that finally put 11th-ranked Baylor in control, and the Bears went on to a 77-67 victory over San Diego State on Tuesday.

Miller, the 6-foot-9 freshman forward, had 20 points and has led the Bears (3-0) in scoring in all three games this season. Acy, a senior, had 13 points.

The game was tied at 32 early in the second half before the two Quincys put the Bears out in front with an 18-5 run.

Miller put the Bears ahead to stay with his inside jumper and scored seven points in the 5-minute spurt, and Acy scored nine.

Chase Tapley had 28 points with eight 3-pointer to lead San Diego State (3-1).

After Tapley made a jumper, Acy made three free throws in an 8-second span before his highlight play, a one-handed reverse dunk.
