2013 NBA Playoff Schedules: Thunder-Rockets, Spurs-Lakers, Nuggets-Warriors, Clippers-Grizzlies

As a general rule, NBA playoff battles in the Western Conference tend to be a lot better than the ones in the Eastern Conference. This year is no exception. Whereas the East boosts one interesting series, maybe, all four series in the West are much-watch events.

The Kobe Bryant-less Lakers got the only team that they can sorta, kinda match up with. The Thunder and Rockets will play in the James Harden Bowl. Denver and Golden State are two of the most exciting teams in the NBA, period. And the Clippers-Grizzlies bring the NBA?s best non-Heat vs. Celtics rivalry to the table.

In all likelihood the Spurs, Thunder, Nuggets and Clippers will prevail ? but at least three out of these four series figure to be entertaining.

Here is the entire schedule for first round:

Thunder (1) vs. Rockets (8)

Game 1: Sun, Apr 21 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 2: Wed, Apr 24 ? 6:00 p.m.

Game 3: Sat, Apr 27 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 4: TBD

Spurs (2) vs. Lakers (7)

Game 1: Sun, Apr 21 ? 2:30 p.m.

Game 2: Wed, Apr 24 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 3: Fri, Apr 26 ? 7:30 p.m.

Game 4: Sun, Apr 28 ? 4:00 p.m.

Nuggets (3) vs. Warriors (6)

Game 1: Sat, Apr 20 ? 3:30 p.m.

Game 2: Tue, Apr 23 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 3: Fri, Apr 26 ? 7:30 p.m.

Game 4: Sun, Apr 28 ? 6:30 p.m.

Vonage Mobile adds video calling for Android 2.3 and up

Vonage Mobile

After so many years as a voice-only service, Vonage is no longer just for phone calls

Vonage is releasing an update to both its Android and iOS apps today to offer users completely free video calling over both Wifi and mobile data. The video calls are of course locked to only being available between two Vonage users, but will support some pretty handy features. You can choose to display either your front or rear camera, which can let you show off what is going on around you. While in a call you can also seamlessly switch between a video and just audio, something that isn't simply done on most video calling solutions.

This puts Vonage more squarely in the camp of services like Skype, which seem to dominate the space currently. The app says it hasn't yet been updated, but when we took a look the feature seems to be live now. So if you're a Vonage user, go grab your update. Those who haven't yet given Vonage a try may now be compelled to give it a shot as well.

NKorea, marking leader's birthday, shows more ire

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? After a day of festivities to mark the 101st birthday of its first leader, North Korea on Tuesday offered new prickly rhetoric against the United States and South Korea, which are watching closely for signs whether it will conduct a medium-range missile test in defiance of international concerns.

State media said the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army issued an ultimatum demanding an apology from South Korea for "hostile acts" and threatening that unspecified retaliatory actions would happen at any time.

The statement, relayed through the KCNA state media agency, came after a day of festivities in North Korea's capital that featured art performances, public dances and crowds thronging to giant bronze statues to pay homage to the late leader Kim Il Sung,

The renewed rhetoric was sparked by a protest in downtown Seoul, where effigies of Kim Il Sung and his son and successor, late leader Kim Jong Il, were burned. Such protests are not unusual in South Korea and this one likely gave the North a pretext to react negatively to calls for joining in dialogue with its neighbors than an actual cause for retaliation.

The North's statement said it would refuse any offers of talks with the South until it apologized for the "monstrous criminal act." North Korea often denounces such protests, but rarely in the name of the Supreme Command, which is headed by Kim Il Sung's grandson and North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong Un.

"If the puppet authorities truly want dialogue and negotiations, they should apologize for all anti-DPRK hostile acts, big and small, and show the compatriots their will to stop all these acts in practice," the statement said, referring to North Korea's official name.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said Tuesday it had received no such ultimatum officially, noting that there is no communications line between the two Koreas.

Pyongyang launched a rocket ahead of the last anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birth, which was the centennial, but the holiday this year has been much more low-key, with Pyongyang residents gathering in performance halls and plazas and taking advantage of subsidized treats, like shaved ice and peanuts, despite unseasonably cold weather.

The calm in Pyongyang has been a striking contrast to the steady flow of retaliatory threats North Korea has issued over ongoing military exercises between South Korea and the United States. Though the maneuvers, called Foal Eagle, are held regularly, North Korea was particularly angry over their inclusion this year of nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers and F-22 fighters.

"The ultimatum is just North Korea's way of saying that it's not willing or ready to talk with the South," said Chang Yong-seok at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University. "North Korea apparently wants to keep the cross-border relations tense for some time to come."

The Tuesday ultimatum comes just after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrapped up a tour to coordinate Washington's response with Beijing, North Korea's most important ally, as well as with Seoul and Tokyo. Kerry said a missile test would be provocation that would further isolate the country and its impoverished people. He said Sunday that the U.S. was "prepared to reach out," but that Pyongyang must first bring down tensions and honor previous agreements.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told a parliamentary committee Monday that North Korea still appeared poised to launch a missile from its east coast. North Korea, which conducted a nuclear test in February, has already been slapped with strengthened U.N. sanctions for violating Security Council resolutions barring the regime from nuclear and missile activity.

To further coordinate their response, South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, will meet with President Barack Obama on May 7 at the White House.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Monday the United States is open to dialogue with North Korea but only if Pyongyang proves itself to be trustworthy.

"The burden remains on Pyongyang. They need to take meaningful steps to show that they'll honor their commitments," Ventrell told reporters in Washington. "We need to see them be serious about denuclearization, indicate their seriousness, and start to reduce the threats and stop provocations."

North Korea has warned that the situation has grown so tense it cannot guarantee the safety of foreigners in the country and said embassies in Pyongyang should think about their evacuation plans. But British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday that although there is reason for concern over the "frenetic and bellicose" rhetoric, Britain believes there has been "no immediate increased risk or danger" to those living in or travelling to North Korea.

Pyongyang's media gave little indication of how high the tensions are.

The front page of the Rodong Sinmun, the Workers' Party newspaper, on Tuesday featured photos of Kim Jong Un at a performance the night before of the Unhasu orchestra, along with his aunt, Kim Kyong Hui, and other top officials. North Korean media also reported that he watched volleyball and basketball games between Kim Il Sung University of Politics and Kim Il Sung Military University.

Starting from early Monday morning, residents dressed in their finest clothing began walking from all parts of Pyongyang to lay flowers and bow before the bronze statues of Kim and his son, late leader Kim Jong Il, as the mournful "Song of Gen. Kim Il Sung" played over and over. Similar statues of the Kims are located in every North Korean province.

Lion Air jet that crashed into sea must be cut up

BALI, Indonesia (AP) -- A brand new Lion Air jet that slammed into the sea as it tried to land on the Indonesian resort island of Bali over the weekend remains stuck in shallow water and must be cut into pieces for removal, vividly underlining the challenges facing the budget airline as it races to expand in Asia.

Authorities initially planned to tow the Boeing 737-800 aircraft that split in two, but have now determined it is too heavy and must be carved into several parts to avoid the possibility of damaging the area's coral reefs, said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan.

The tail is perched on top of a reef, making it unsteady when waves hit the wreckage. Purwanto, general manager of Bali's Ngurah Rai airport who uses one name like many Indonesians, said a team of Navy divers recovered the cockpit voice recorder Monday after cutting a hole in the plane's partially submerged tail. The recorder is a key part of the investigation as officials work to determine what caused the crash. The flight data recorder had already been removed and sent to Jakarta for analysis.

All 101 passengers on the domestic flight ? including five foreigners from Singapore, France and Belgium ? and seven crew members survived Saturday's crash, and no one was seriously injured. The plane's belly thumped into the sea short of the airport's runway, fracturing the fuselage. It was estimated to be traveling about 350 kilometers per hour (218 miles per hour) at the time of impact.

The accident has raised questions among some analysts about whether Lion Air may be putting growth ahead of safety. Indonesia's largest private airline, which was started in 1999 by two brothers who pooled $850,000, stunned the aviation industry two years ago when it announced the biggest-ever order for Boeing planes ? 230 jets in all ? at an event with President Barack Obama. It made headlines again last month after signing a $24 billion deal to buy 234 planes from Airbus, the French aircraft maker's largest order ever.

The plane involved in Saturday's crash was registered in Indonesia on March 20 and had less than 150 hours in the air, Transportation Minister Evert Ernest Mangindaan told reporters at a news conference Monday. The Indonesian pilot was experienced, with 12,000 flight hours, but it's still unclear whether human error played any role.

Lion Air has about 45 percent of Indonesia's air travel market and hopes to increase that to 60 percent by 2014 as cheap travel continues to boom in the sprawling archipelago of 240 million people. The airline has had seven accidents and incidents since 2002. Most were minor and all but one occurred during landing, according to the Aviation Safety Network's website. The worst crash in 2004 killed 25 people.

The pressure to keep planes flying, coupled with the difficulty of finding enough qualified pilots can add a lot of strain, said Tom Ballantyne, a Sydney-based aviation expert.

"It's certainly an issue for fast-expanding airlines," he said.

Indonesia is one of fastest growing air travel markets in Asia, but the country has a troubled past when it comes to air safety. In 2007, the Europe Union banned all Indonesian airlines due to the country's poor record. It has lifted restrictions for some carriers as improvements are made, but Lion Air remains on the blacklist.

Despite efforts to clean up the industry, Indonesia has struggled to find enough qualified pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers and inspectors. Airport technology and infrastructure also lag behind, highlighted by a 15-minute blackout late last year at Jakarta's international airport that disrupted its 26-year-old radar system.

Indonesia currently needs up to 800 pilots a year, but it can only prepare about 500, said Mangindaan.

"We have to say that we still lack pilots in the face of this air travel boom," he said. Foreign pilots are now being employed to work for domestic airlines and flight schools are being established, he said.

Alvin Lie, a former Indonesian lawmaker and aviation analyst, said Lion Air's aggressive push to buy more aircraft is likely adding to the burden on its pilots. But he said the Bali crash will likely not affect business in Indonesia. However, the airline has also positioned itself to take on budget carrier AirAsia, which dominates no-frills travel in the region.

"If abroad, that would definitely reduce consumers' confidence," he said of the crash. "But the characteristics of consumers here are different. The most important thing for them is the cheap price."

This Bobbing Display Lets You Read While Running On a Treadmill

There's a recent fitness trend that sees people switching from a traditional desk to working on a treadmill to maximize their physical activity. The problem is that at anything more vigorous than a casual stride, it's difficult to read a static display while on a treadmill. At least until researchers at Purdue University commercialize their new ReadingMate system. More »

Should you download Facebook Home?

The Facebook Home suite of apps and the HTC First ? the first smartphone to come prepackaged with Home ? both launch today. Whether or not you should pick them up may depend on how chained you are to Facebook.?

Facebook Home, a new suite of Android apps, debuted today on the Google Play store ? and assuming you've got one of the phones capable of running the software (The Verge has a good list) and Android 4.0 or higher,?you can download the whole package right now.

Meanwhile, along with the Facebook Home software, today is also the launch day for the mid-range HTC First handset, the first phone to come prepackaged with Facebook Home.?

So should you download the Facebook Home software? It depends on what kind of user you are. Casual Facebook users ? the kind of folks who sign on every couple of days, for instance ? are likely not going to be that interested in turning their entire interface into a gigantic Facebook feed. But if you're a regular Facebook user (and that's probably a lot of you), you may like having all those Facebook functionalities right at your finger tips.?

Over at The Wall Street Journal, Walt Mossberg calls home "the?boldest attempt by any non-hardware company to alter a phone?s native user interface."?

Mr. Mossberg found some downsides to the software ? for instance, it blocks or otherwise obscures some key Android apps, including the one-step camera icon ? but in general, his write-up was a favorable one, as were most reviews.?

"I found Facebook Home to be easy to use, elegantly designed and addictive," he writes. "Although I?m a regular Facebook user, I found that, with Home, I paid more attention than ever to my news feed, Liked items more often and used Facebook?s Messenger service more often. So, if you are a big Facebook fan, Facebook Home can be a big win."

As for the HTC First phone, reactions have been a little more mixed. It's worth noting that the First is not a high-powered phone ? with its $99 list price (with a contract, of course), dual-core processor, and 5-megapixel camera, the First lags well behind its top-of-the-line competitors. The Verge calls the camera on the device "muddy" and Ars Technica points out that, in terms of speed, the First is best compared to older handsets such as the LG Optimus G.?

The HTC First, notes Alex Colon of PC Mag, is "a decent choice for the money, and a decent choice if you can't be bothered to load the Facebook Home suite onto a different Android phone. But you can get the?Samsung Galaxy S III?for the same price as the First, and that gets you a bigger screen, a microSD card slot, a better camera, and Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer."?
