2013 NBA Playoff Schedules: Thunder-Rockets, Spurs-Lakers, Nuggets-Warriors, Clippers-Grizzlies

As a general rule, NBA playoff battles in the Western Conference tend to be a lot better than the ones in the Eastern Conference. This year is no exception. Whereas the East boosts one interesting series, maybe, all four series in the West are much-watch events.

The Kobe Bryant-less Lakers got the only team that they can sorta, kinda match up with. The Thunder and Rockets will play in the James Harden Bowl. Denver and Golden State are two of the most exciting teams in the NBA, period. And the Clippers-Grizzlies bring the NBA?s best non-Heat vs. Celtics rivalry to the table.

In all likelihood the Spurs, Thunder, Nuggets and Clippers will prevail ? but at least three out of these four series figure to be entertaining.

Here is the entire schedule for first round:

Thunder (1) vs. Rockets (8)

Game 1: Sun, Apr 21 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 2: Wed, Apr 24 ? 6:00 p.m.

Game 3: Sat, Apr 27 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 4: TBD

Spurs (2) vs. Lakers (7)

Game 1: Sun, Apr 21 ? 2:30 p.m.

Game 2: Wed, Apr 24 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 3: Fri, Apr 26 ? 7:30 p.m.

Game 4: Sun, Apr 28 ? 4:00 p.m.

Nuggets (3) vs. Warriors (6)

Game 1: Sat, Apr 20 ? 3:30 p.m.

Game 2: Tue, Apr 23 ? 8:30 p.m.

Game 3: Fri, Apr 26 ? 7:30 p.m.

Vonage Mobile adds video calling for Android 2.3 and up

Vonage Mobile

After so many years as a voice-only service, Vonage is no longer just for phone calls

Vonage is releasing an update to both its Android and iOS apps today to offer users completely free video calling over both Wifi and mobile data. The video calls are of course locked to only being available between two Vonage users, but will support some pretty handy features. You can choose to display either your front or rear camera, which can let you show off what is going on around you. While in a call you can also seamlessly switch between a video and just audio, something that isn't simply done on most video calling solutions.

This puts Vonage more squarely in the camp of services like Skype, which seem to dominate the space currently. The app says it hasn't yet been updated, but when we took a look the feature seems to be live now. So if you're a Vonage user, go grab your update. Those who haven't yet given Vonage a try may now be compelled to give it a shot as well.

NKorea, marking leader's birthday, shows more ire

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? After a day of festivities to mark the 101st birthday of its first leader, North Korea on Tuesday offered new prickly rhetoric against the United States and South Korea, which are watching closely for signs whether it will conduct a medium-range missile test in defiance of international concerns.

State media said the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army issued an ultimatum demanding an apology from South Korea for "hostile acts" and threatening that unspecified retaliatory actions would happen at any time.

The statement, relayed through the KCNA state media agency, came after a day of festivities in North Korea's capital that featured art performances, public dances and crowds thronging to giant bronze statues to pay homage to the late leader Kim Il Sung,

The renewed rhetoric was sparked by a protest in downtown Seoul, where effigies of Kim Il Sung and his son and successor, late leader Kim Jong Il, were burned. Such protests are not unusual in South Korea and this one likely gave the North a pretext to react negatively to calls for joining in dialogue with its neighbors than an actual cause for retaliation.

The North's statement said it would refuse any offers of talks with the South until it apologized for the "monstrous criminal act." North Korea often denounces such protests, but rarely in the name of the Supreme Command, which is headed by Kim Il Sung's grandson and North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong Un.

"If the puppet authorities truly want dialogue and negotiations, they should apologize for all anti-DPRK hostile acts, big and small, and show the compatriots their will to stop all these acts in practice," the statement said, referring to North Korea's official name.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said Tuesday it had received no such ultimatum officially, noting that there is no communications line between the two Koreas.

Pyongyang launched a rocket ahead of the last anniversary of Kim Il Sung's birth, which was the centennial, but the holiday this year has been much more low-key, with Pyongyang residents gathering in performance halls and plazas and taking advantage of subsidized treats, like shaved ice and peanuts, despite unseasonably cold weather.

The calm in Pyongyang has been a striking contrast to the steady flow of retaliatory threats North Korea has issued over ongoing military exercises between South Korea and the United States. Though the maneuvers, called Foal Eagle, are held regularly, North Korea was particularly angry over their inclusion this year of nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers and F-22 fighters.

"The ultimatum is just North Korea's way of saying that it's not willing or ready to talk with the South," said Chang Yong-seok at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University. "North Korea apparently wants to keep the cross-border relations tense for some time to come."

The Tuesday ultimatum comes just after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrapped up a tour to coordinate Washington's response with Beijing, North Korea's most important ally, as well as with Seoul and Tokyo. Kerry said a missile test would be provocation that would further isolate the country and its impoverished people. He said Sunday that the U.S. was "prepared to reach out," but that Pyongyang must first bring down tensions and honor previous agreements.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told a parliamentary committee Monday that North Korea still appeared poised to launch a missile from its east coast. North Korea, which conducted a nuclear test in February, has already been slapped with strengthened U.N. sanctions for violating Security Council resolutions barring the regime from nuclear and missile activity.

To further coordinate their response, South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, will meet with President Barack Obama on May 7 at the White House.

State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said Monday the United States is open to dialogue with North Korea but only if Pyongyang proves itself to be trustworthy.

"The burden remains on Pyongyang. They need to take meaningful steps to show that they'll honor their commitments," Ventrell told reporters in Washington. "We need to see them be serious about denuclearization, indicate their seriousness, and start to reduce the threats and stop provocations."

North Korea has warned that the situation has grown so tense it cannot guarantee the safety of foreigners in the country and said embassies in Pyongyang should think about their evacuation plans. But British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday that although there is reason for concern over the "frenetic and bellicose" rhetoric, Britain believes there has been "no immediate increased risk or danger" to those living in or travelling to North Korea.

Pyongyang's media gave little indication of how high the tensions are.

The front page of the Rodong Sinmun, the Workers' Party newspaper, on Tuesday featured photos of Kim Jong Un at a performance the night before of the Unhasu orchestra, along with his aunt, Kim Kyong Hui, and other top officials. North Korean media also reported that he watched volleyball and basketball games between Kim Il Sung University of Politics and Kim Il Sung Military University.

Starting from early Monday morning, residents dressed in their finest clothing began walking from all parts of Pyongyang to lay flowers and bow before the bronze statues of Kim and his son, late leader Kim Jong Il, as the mournful "Song of Gen. Kim Il Sung" played over and over. Similar statues of the Kims are located in every North Korean province.

Lion Air jet that crashed into sea must be cut up

BALI, Indonesia (AP) -- A brand new Lion Air jet that slammed into the sea as it tried to land on the Indonesian resort island of Bali over the weekend remains stuck in shallow water and must be cut into pieces for removal, vividly underlining the challenges facing the budget airline as it races to expand in Asia.

Authorities initially planned to tow the Boeing 737-800 aircraft that split in two, but have now determined it is too heavy and must be carved into several parts to avoid the possibility of damaging the area's coral reefs, said Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan.

The tail is perched on top of a reef, making it unsteady when waves hit the wreckage. Purwanto, general manager of Bali's Ngurah Rai airport who uses one name like many Indonesians, said a team of Navy divers recovered the cockpit voice recorder Monday after cutting a hole in the plane's partially submerged tail. The recorder is a key part of the investigation as officials work to determine what caused the crash. The flight data recorder had already been removed and sent to Jakarta for analysis.

All 101 passengers on the domestic flight ? including five foreigners from Singapore, France and Belgium ? and seven crew members survived Saturday's crash, and no one was seriously injured. The plane's belly thumped into the sea short of the airport's runway, fracturing the fuselage. It was estimated to be traveling about 350 kilometers per hour (218 miles per hour) at the time of impact.

The accident has raised questions among some analysts about whether Lion Air may be putting growth ahead of safety. Indonesia's largest private airline, which was started in 1999 by two brothers who pooled $850,000, stunned the aviation industry two years ago when it announced the biggest-ever order for Boeing planes ? 230 jets in all ? at an event with President Barack Obama. It made headlines again last month after signing a $24 billion deal to buy 234 planes from Airbus, the French aircraft maker's largest order ever.

The plane involved in Saturday's crash was registered in Indonesia on March 20 and had less than 150 hours in the air, Transportation Minister Evert Ernest Mangindaan told reporters at a news conference Monday. The Indonesian pilot was experienced, with 12,000 flight hours, but it's still unclear whether human error played any role.

Lion Air has about 45 percent of Indonesia's air travel market and hopes to increase that to 60 percent by 2014 as cheap travel continues to boom in the sprawling archipelago of 240 million people. The airline has had seven accidents and incidents since 2002. Most were minor and all but one occurred during landing, according to the Aviation Safety Network's website. The worst crash in 2004 killed 25 people.

The pressure to keep planes flying, coupled with the difficulty of finding enough qualified pilots can add a lot of strain, said Tom Ballantyne, a Sydney-based aviation expert.

"It's certainly an issue for fast-expanding airlines," he said.

Indonesia is one of fastest growing air travel markets in Asia, but the country has a troubled past when it comes to air safety. In 2007, the Europe Union banned all Indonesian airlines due to the country's poor record. It has lifted restrictions for some carriers as improvements are made, but Lion Air remains on the blacklist.

Despite efforts to clean up the industry, Indonesia has struggled to find enough qualified pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers and inspectors. Airport technology and infrastructure also lag behind, highlighted by a 15-minute blackout late last year at Jakarta's international airport that disrupted its 26-year-old radar system.

Indonesia currently needs up to 800 pilots a year, but it can only prepare about 500, said Mangindaan.

"We have to say that we still lack pilots in the face of this air travel boom," he said. Foreign pilots are now being employed to work for domestic airlines and flight schools are being established, he said.

Alvin Lie, a former Indonesian lawmaker and aviation analyst, said Lion Air's aggressive push to buy more aircraft is likely adding to the burden on its pilots. But he said the Bali crash will likely not affect business in Indonesia. However, the airline has also positioned itself to take on budget carrier AirAsia, which dominates no-frills travel in the region.

"If abroad, that would definitely reduce consumers' confidence," he said of the crash. "But the characteristics of consumers here are different. The most important thing for them is the cheap price."

Should you download Facebook Home?

The Facebook Home suite of apps and the HTC First ? the first smartphone to come prepackaged with Home ? both launch today. Whether or not you should pick them up may depend on how chained you are to Facebook.?

Facebook Home, a new suite of Android apps, debuted today on the Google Play store ? and assuming you've got one of the phones capable of running the software (The Verge has a good list) and Android 4.0 or higher,?you can download the whole package right now.

Meanwhile, along with the Facebook Home software, today is also the launch day for the mid-range HTC First handset, the first phone to come prepackaged with Facebook Home.?

So should you download the Facebook Home software? It depends on what kind of user you are. Casual Facebook users ? the kind of folks who sign on every couple of days, for instance ? are likely not going to be that interested in turning their entire interface into a gigantic Facebook feed. But if you're a regular Facebook user (and that's probably a lot of you), you may like having all those Facebook functionalities right at your finger tips.?

Over at The Wall Street Journal, Walt Mossberg calls home "the?boldest attempt by any non-hardware company to alter a phone?s native user interface."?

Mr. Mossberg found some downsides to the software ? for instance, it blocks or otherwise obscures some key Android apps, including the one-step camera icon ? but in general, his write-up was a favorable one, as were most reviews.?

"I found Facebook Home to be easy to use, elegantly designed and addictive," he writes. "Although I?m a regular Facebook user, I found that, with Home, I paid more attention than ever to my news feed, Liked items more often and used Facebook?s Messenger service more often. So, if you are a big Facebook fan, Facebook Home can be a big win."

As for the HTC First phone, reactions have been a little more mixed. It's worth noting that the First is not a high-powered phone ? with its $99 list price (with a contract, of course), dual-core processor, and 5-megapixel camera, the First lags well behind its top-of-the-line competitors. The Verge calls the camera on the device "muddy" and Ars Technica points out that, in terms of speed, the First is best compared to older handsets such as the LG Optimus G.?

The HTC First, notes Alex Colon of PC Mag, is "a decent choice for the money, and a decent choice if you can't be bothered to load the Facebook Home suite onto a different Android phone. But you can get the?Samsung Galaxy S III?for the same price as the First, and that gets you a bigger screen, a microSD card slot, a better camera, and Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer."?

Abuse of students doing anthropological fieldwork

Apr. 13, 2013 ? College athletes are not the only ones who sometimes suffer at the hands of higher ups. A new report brings to light a more hidden and pernicious problem -- the psychological, physical and sexual abuse of students in the field of biological anthropology working in field studies far from home.

The report is based on an online survey and telephone interviews that, in a period of less than two months, elicited accounts of abuse from dozens of women and men working in the field of biological anthropology.

This is a first attempt to systematically document the harassment, abuse or assaults young researchers sometimes face in the course of doing anthropological fieldwork at remote sites, said University of Illinois anthropology professor Kathryn Clancy, one of four researchers to present the new findings at the 2013 meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropology.

Most students and postdoctoral researchers consider field research a stepping stone to a better career, Clancy said.

"This is something that most biological anthropologists, cultural anthropologists and archeologists see as a fairly necessary experience," she said. "Some people can do an entirely lab-based project or a computer modeling project or a local project, but most of us need to go into the field."

The team recruited subjects through outreach on social media and websites devoted to researchers in biological anthropology. They heard from 122 men and women, more than half of whom had experienced or witnessed sexual harassment, physical abuse or sexual assault at the hands of site managers, project directors or peers living and working at field research sites. The researchers defined sexual assault as "any kind of inappropriate physical contact, unwanted physical touching, assault, all the way up to rape," Clancy said.

"Overwhelmingly, we're seeing junior women being targeted by senior men," Clancy said. "59 percent of respondents have experienced sexual harassment. Women are 3 times more likely to experience harassment than men. And 19 percent of respondents have been sexually assaulted."

The perpetrators of the harassment and assaults were usually men, but some women also abused their students. One female site director, for example, refused to let women leave the work site to urinate.

The researchers did not directly ask the respondents if they had been raped, but some of the respondents volunteered that they had been raped by research leaders or peers at fieldwork sites. Others reported that they had witnessed the systematic targeting of junior members of the research team for harassment or assault.

Such working conditions can have devastating effects on the health and wellbeing of those who are targeted and those who witness the abuse, Clancy said. They also force students to choose between their career goals and their desire to speak up for themselves or others.

Clancy and her colleagues noticed that larger, more organized research sites tended to have fewer incidents of abuse, harassment or assault than smaller, less formal fieldwork sites. Those who worked on teams that included women in leadership positions also reported less harassment and abuse. Some respondents said they noticed an uptick in abusive behavior when female leaders were absent.

"The larger a field site, the more organized you have to be, so you're more likely to actually have ground rules or a code of conduct, or a chain of command that prevents people from feeling they can get away with bad behavior," Clancy said.

The researchers are proposing that funding agencies like the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health require the same kinds of protocols and oversight of researcher safety in the field that are routine in the laboratory.

"If we want to fund a postdoctoral researcher, we have to write a postdoc mentoring plan so that we prove that this postdoc isn't just going to be a lackey for us and that we're actually going to mentor them and train them and help them get a job," Clancy said. "I have to make sure my students have access to certain kinds of vaccines if they're working with blood. We have to go through Institutional Review Boards to protect our research subjects. We have to go through animal protocols to protect our animals. But we don't have to protect our researchers in the field."

More international support needed for Jordan to cope with Syrian refugees, says UN development chief

Greater international support is needed for countries currently absorbing increasing waves of refugees fleeing Syria, including Jordan.

Amman, Jordan (PRWEB) April 11, 2013

Greater international support is needed for countries currently absorbing increasing waves of refugees fleeing Syria, including Jordan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark said yesterday as she wrapped up a four day visit to Jordan.

The deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in Syria has forced thousands of Syrians to flee and seek refuge in neighbouring countries, with Jordan alone currently hosting nearly half a million internationally displaced persons (IDPs) from Syria, according to news reports.

?Jordan is suffering a crisis clearly caused by the spillover of the very tragic events in Syria,? said Helen Clark, who met with HM Queen Rania and a range of Jordan senior officials, women leaders, activists, donors and the UN Country Team there. ?As the international community addresses the significant needs of the refugees, I think it is important that Jordan?s particular circumstances are also taken into account.?

More than 1.3 million Syrian refugees have crossed borders into Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey since conflict erupted. The number could exceed four million by the end of the year, the UN Refugee Agency announced this week. Since the beginning of the year, 1,500 to 2,000 Syrians have been pouring into Jordan daily.

?The refugee flow is very, very significant and we acknowledge not only Jordan?s generosity in keeping its border open but also the considerable strain on its host communities for jobs, energy, water, health and education services,? Helen Clark said.

This large influx of refugees into Jordan is putting a considerable burden on local Jordanian host communities, and their social and economic services.

?As some agencies like UNHCR and UNICEF focus on the Syrian refugees, others, including UNDP, are looking at how we can help alleviate pressure on the host communities who are under strain as well,? Helen Clark said. ?This is a crisis that is not only affecting Syria but clearly its neighbours too.?

During her visit, Helen Clark met with Jordan?s Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour to discuss how UNDP can support these host communities in Jordan and increase their ability to not only absorb the influx of refugees but also to mitigate any possible tensions between the refugees and the host communities through support to basic social services and job creation for Jordanian youth.

The Prime Minister also briefed Helen Clark on the proposed reform programme and potential UNDP support.

?This is a very substantial reform programme,? said Helen Clark. ?Should this programme be approved, we are there for Jordan across the wide range of areas UNDP works in, including governance and political development reform, decentralization and poverty reduction.?

Helen Clark was in Jordan to attend the Arab Development Forum and a key UNDP regional meeting of its country-level offices in the Arab States.

Beijing reports its 1st case of new bird flu virus

BEIJING (AP) ? A 7-year-old girl has become Beijing's first confirmed case of a new strain of the bird flu virus that has killed 11 people and sickened 37 others in eastern China, officials said Saturday.

The girl, whose parents are in the live poultry trade, was admitted to a hospital Thursday with symptoms of fever, sore throat, coughing and headache, the Beijing Health Bureau said. She was confirmed to be infected with the H7N9 virus on Saturday after tests by disease control and prevention centers, the bureau said.

The case in China's capital is the first one reported outside eastern China, where the virus was first spotted in late March, prompting massive slaughtering of live fowl and bans on the poultry trade in several cities, including the financial hub of Shanghai. Shanghai, the center of the outbreak, has reported 21 cases, including seven fatalities. One person was discharged after recovering, the local government has said.

The Beijing Health Bureau said the girl was recovering in a hospital and was in stable condition.

Shanghai authorities said Saturday that a 56-year-old man, the husband of a woman hospitalized with the virus earlier this month, became the city's latest case after testing positive for H7N9, but that it was inconclusive as to whether he had been infected by his wife.

Health officials believe people are contracting the H7N9 virus through direct contact with infected fowl and say there is no evidence the virus is spreading easily among people.

Neighboring Jiangsu province on Saturday confirmed two more cases ? a 77-year-old woman and a 72-year-old man, both in critical condition. The province has reported 14 cases, including one fatality.

Zhejiang province has reported 11 cases, including two reported Saturday by state media, and Anhui province has had two.

China has been more open in its response to the new virus than it was a decade ago with an outbreak of SARS, when authorities were highly criticized for not releasing information.

Student charged in mall shootings; 2 hurt

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) ? An 18-year-old college student was charged Friday with shooting and wounding two women at a mall branch of a southwest Virginia community college before he was subdued, the city's police chief said.

Neil Allan MacInnis, of Christiansburg, faces two counts each of malicious wounding and using a firearm in the commission of a felony stemming from the shooting at the satellite campus of New River Community College at New River Valley Mall, Christiansburg Police Chief Mark Sisson said Friday night.

MacInnis, who was a student at the community college, was being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail.

Sisson said authorities were still trying to establish a motive and any connection between MacInnis and the victims, who were hospitalized following the shooting in this town of approximately 21,000, less than 10 miles from Blacksburg, home to Virginia Tech.

He said authorities are investigating online postings allegedly made by MacInnis prior to the Friday shooting but that he was unable to confirm whether those postings were legitimate.

"Today has been a very tough day for law enforcement officers involved, it's been a very tough day for victims and their families, it's been a very tough day for the suspect's family," Sisson said before reading a prepared statement at a Friday night news conference. He did not take any additional questions.

One of the victims was airlifted to the hospital and the other was taken by ambulance. Authorities did not identify the victims or provide updated information on their conditions.

The type of weapon, how it was obtained and how many shots were fired during the incident were not being released due to the ongoing investigation, Sisson said.

The police chief also said MacInnis participated in the Christiansburg Police Department Citizens Academy program in 2012. The 12-week course gives citizens an idea what happens at the department on a typical day, according to a press release seeking participants for the free program. Participants are able to get a chance to ride along with police officers, tour the officers' training facility and practice with firearms at the firing range, the news release said.

The shooting took place at about 2 p.m. The community college was closed Friday following the shooting and Saturday classes were cancelled, according to its website. The mall was set to reopen Saturday at noon.

Friday isn't usually a busy day at the school's mall campus, Ben Kramer, an activities counselor for the community college, told The Roanoke Times. Enrollment is roughly 1,500, and about a third of those students likely were on campus, he said.

Student Josh Brown said he was working on a computer near the classrooms when the shots were fired.

"I heard one gunshot, and I didn't know what it was. ... I saw people running out," he told the newspaper.

Brown then got up and ran out himself.

"I'll be scared to come back to school," he said as he started to cry. "What's wrong with people? Who would do something like this?"

Best Small Form-Factor PC Case?

Best Small Form-Factor PC Case? Building an HTPC? Or maybe you just want to build a new system but you don't want it to take up a ton of space or look like a monolith under your desk? If that's the case, you might need a smaller form factor, perhaps something that's Mini-ITX or Micro-ATX, and a case to match. This week we want to hear about which of those smaller, more elegant PC cases.

We recognize that not everyone wants a huge, full-sized tower, and when we last asked you for the best computer cases, the contenders were all towers with plenty of airflow, space to move around, expansion bays, and more. This week we want to take a different approach. We want to know which cases you think are the best for someone building an HTPC, a Hackintosh, or any workstation that doesn't have to be a huge high-end rig. Leave your nominations in the discussions below!

Hive Five nominations take place in the discussions, where you post your favorite tool for the job. We get hundreds of nominations, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your post like so: VOTE: BEST MINI PC CASE. Please don't include your vote in a reply to another person. Nominations emailed to us will not be counted. Instead, make your vote and reply separate discussions. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.

About the Hive Five: The Hive Five feature series asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get: "Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favorite tools to get the job done. Every weekend, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last week's five best document scanners for going paperless.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Mobile CRM Apps To Grow 500% By 2014 As Market Turns With Decline In PC Shipments

gartnerGartner Research is reporting mobile CRM apps will grow 500?percent by 2014, another sign of a shifting market that has more to do with work getting done in the cloud more so than from a server behind the firewall. This is buttressed by Gartner’s news that SaaS providers will represent more than 50 percent of profits in the CRM market by 2016 and the steep decline in PC shipments that Gartner ?reported yesterday. Gartner reports there are 200 apps now in app stores. By 2014, there will be 1,200.?Mobile apps will come in a variety of flavors, attacking specific aspects of the CRM experience. Gartner, citing a CIO survey of more than 2,000 people, predicts that vendors will need to build mobile apps around their specific strengths. Gartner also reported that Salesforce.com remains the No. 1 CRM vendor with 26 percent growth and $2.5 billion in revenue last year. In contrast, Gartner states SAP grew 0.1 percent year-on-year and totaled $2.3 billion in CRM revenue. That is a huge difference but reflects why consulting companies like Deloitte are focusing more on Salesforce for CRM integrations. The money is in hooking up SaaS environments to old-school legacy systems. The rise of mobile apps comes with a decline in PC shipments. According to Gartner, “worldwide?PC?shipments totaled 79.2 million units in the first quarter of 2013, an 11.2. percent decline from the first quarter of 2012. Global?PC?shipments went below 80 million units for the first time since the second quarter of 2009. All regions showed a decrease in shipments, with the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region showing the steepest decline.” Mobile’s rise also reflects the growing momentum for SaaS. In 2012, almost 39 percent of the CRM software market revenue was delivered by SaaS. Gartner forecasts the market to increase 42 percent by the end of 2013. During 2016, more than 50 percent of the CRM software revenue will be delivered by SaaS. But overall, the CRM market is not showing big growth, demonstrating how companies like Salesforce could be disrupted. The overall market is expected to grow just 9.7 percent in 2013. That?relatively?small growth reflects how systems of record, such as CRM, are becoming less important in an app-centric economy. That app-centric focus is why Salesforce is making its own big push into mobile and conversely demonstrates why companies like Base CRMare growing so fast with their mobile-centric approach.

14 Cities With the Most Foreclosures Right Now | AOL Real Estate

By Mamta Badkar

One in every 859 U.S. homes is receiving a foreclosure filing, according to RealtyTrac's latest foreclosure report. Foreclosure filings were reported on 152,500 U.S. properties. This was down 1 percent month-over-month.

Certain housing markets have recovered well and economists are getting increasingly bullish about the national housing recovery. But housing is a local story, and many continue to suffer from an extremely high foreclosure rate.

"Although the overall national foreclosure trend continues to head lower, late-blooming foreclosures are bolting higher in some local markets where aggressive foreclosure prevention efforts in previous years are wearing off," said Daren Blomquist, vice president at RealtyTrac, in a press release. We drew on RealtyTrac's report to highlight the 14 metros with the highest foreclosure rate.

Note: The metros are ranked by foreclosure rate i.e. 1 in every X homes received a foreclosure filing. We picked the 14 metros with the highest foreclosure rate from all the metros measured by RealtyTrac.

Effect of medication is affected by copies of genetic information

Apr. 10, 2013 ? The number of copies of the complete genetic information found in human cells can have a decisive effect on the properties of these cells. The results may help to explain why certain medications have strong side effects on sperm and eggs, and why certain organisms remain unaffected by environmental changes.

This is shown by studies that researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, together with researchers from Norway and France, are now publishing in the journal PLoS Genetics.

All cells in our bodies contain copies of the genetic information. However, different cells contain different numbers of the complete genetic information. Normal human cells usually contain two copies of the genetic information, and thus two copies of every gene. Eggs and sperm, however, only contain one set of genes.

"At the same time, the cells of many plants and amphibians contain many more copies of genetic information, and the number of copies can also vary during an organism's development and between different stages of life," explains Jonas Warringer, a researcher at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology.

Research has often overlooked this variation in genetic information. However, Jonas Warringer and his colleagues have now used ordinary baker's yeast to show that the number of copies of genetic information has a decisive effect on the properties of cells.

Jonas and his colleagues collected yeast samples from around the world and created two variants of each yeast culture -- one with two copies of the genetic information, and the other with just one copy. The researchers then examined the properties of these yeast cells, such as their tolerance to cancer medication and antibiotics. The study, which is reported on in the journal PLOS One, shows that the number of copies of genetic information has a decisive effect on the properties of cells.

"The cells with two copies of genetic information showed greater tolerance to some substances," continues Jonas, "while in other cases those with only one copy had an advantage. Surprisingly enough, these effects were even maintained in species separated by several billions of generations of evolution, suggesting that they are actually of great importance in nature."

The researchers' discovery may be of considerable significance in terms of knowledge about what lies behind differences between organisms in nature.

"It may also help to explain why certain medications have particularly strong side effects on sperm and eggs whereas others do not, and why certain organisms are affected by some environmental changes while others are unaffected," he concludes.

Scientists await new worlds as CERN collider is refitted

By Robert Evans

GENEVA (Reuters) - As two yellow-helmeted electricians rise slowly on a hoist from the cavern floor to check cabling on a huge red magnet, CERN scientist Marc Goulette makes clear he sees cosmic significance in their task.

"When this refit is completed," he says, gesturing across the gigantic Large Hadron Collider (LHC), "we shall be ready to explore an entirely new realm of physics."

The collider is only five years old but, after swiftly finding a crucial missing link to support mankind's main concept of the universe, is now entering a two-year revamp to double its power in the hope of breathtaking new discoveries.

Some scientists predict it will help identify the nature of strange dark matter that lurks around planets, stars and galaxies; others that it might find a zoo of new particles or even catch hints that space has more than three dimensions.

Buoyed by the early success, experimental physicists and theorists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research housed on a sprawling campus near Geneva, hope more stunning findings may follow as soon as this decade.

To make this possible hundreds of engineers and technicians are preparing CERN's collider -- a 27-km (17-mile) subterranean complex of machinery and cables.

By 2015, it has to be made ready to double its power and its reach into the microscopic world of elementary particles that emerged from the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago.

"It is a giant task," says senior CERN engineer Simon Baird, showing Reuters around the tunnel 100 meters (330 feet) below the Franco-Swiss border at the foot of the Jura mountains.

"Every connection must be checked and reinforced during this shutdown."

Just 10 days after the LHC was first fired up in 2008, a helium leak and resulting explosion in the tunnel caused major damage, and repairs took two years. "We have to be more certain than certain that can't happen again," adds Baird.

Despite the setback, in just over two years of operations -- involving 10,000 specialists around the world analyzing the data its particle collisions produced -- the LHC came up last summer with the long-sought elementary particle, the Higgs boson.

BEYOND STANDARD MODEL

That, explained Canadian physicist Pauline Gagnon, "was the final brick in the edifice of our concept of the universe" -- the three-decade old Standard Model that fits everything known about how particles, at the base of all matter, behave.

"With the LHC power doubled, we will start looking for what we think is out there beyond that model. And we always hope that something will turn up that no-one had ever thought of. The most likely is something totally unexpected."

But among the "known unknowns" to be sought, Gagnon plumps for dark matter -- the invisible stuff that makes up some 27 percent of the universe, six times more than the normal material that reflects light and can be seen from earth or space.

James Wells, a U.S. professor and theoretician at CERN for two years, looks to more exotic versions of the Higgs -- the particle whose associated energy field turned matter to mass after the Big Bang, shaping galaxies -- and life on earth.

Those, he said, "could lead us to supersymmetry" -- a theory, so far unsupported by LHC data, that every elementary particle has an invisible and heavier partner -- "and to up to eight more spatial dimensions".

Oliver Buchmueller, an experimental physicist, also hopes to see proof of supersymmetry -- popularly known among proponents as SUSY -- and of the extra dimensions foreseen in string theory -- the idea that particles are no more than vibrating strings.

Could that take science beyond, into the extension of string theory that predicts the existence of parallel universes or a perpetually growing galaxy of universes, unpenetrable one from the other, that cosmologists call the Multiverse?

"Not in our time," says Wells. "But we humans are amazingly creative. One day, if it exists, we will find a way to prove it."

'Django Unchained' pulled from China theaters

By The Hollywood Reporter

It all seemed a little too good to be true, and perhaps in the end it was: Seconds into its first screenings in China, Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" was abruptly pulled from cinemas on Thursday. It would have been the first time a Tarantino movie was given an officially sanctioned release in the country.

Movie theater operators in China are saying the film was pulled for "technical reasons."

PHOTOS: Cut, censored, changed: 10 Hollywood films tweaked for international release

"We got the notice from our headquarters around 10:00am this morning but it was too late to cancel two viewings," an official from a Shanghai theater told Reuters.

"We were only told that it was due to some technology problems and were told to cancel it. They didn't tell us when the film would be shown again."

A spokesperson for Sony China told the Hollywood Reporter that they cannot currently comment on the film's China release. The film had been promoted heavily in Chinese cities during the weeks leading up to Thursday's planned opening.

Various cinemagoers who attended the abruptly suspended screenings wrote on Weibo -- China's version of Twitter -- that the film had just begun to roll when it was stopped and they were told to exit the theater. The Chinese press has quoted several unnamed industry insiders as saying the film was held up because of its brief nude scenes.

STORY: "Django Unchained" to open in China with less vivid blood

China's State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) pre-screens and censors all films that are show in the country's cinemas. Many China-watchers had hailed the approval of "Django" for Chinese exhibition as a small sign of increased tolerance in the country.

Scattered after-midnight screenings were held in major Chinese cities early Thursday morning, before SARFT issued the suspension order.

Tarantino is said to have made limited changes to the film to get State approval for the release, including muting the color of blood in its many violent sequences.

Scores of?Weibo users and film bloggers in China were posting strongly-worded messages about the film's suspension Thursday afternoon.

The blogger behind Chinese webportal?Dianyingpiaofang --?one of the most popular sites specializing in box office figures in the country -- wrote this afternoon: "It doesn't matter whether this is a 'technical problem', as this is going to become a joke. It doesn't matter whether they cut 'Django' or not, (officials) have already cut themselves."

Another Weibo?user writing under the handle "Cfcu"?lamented how "Django" is actually more politically tame -- in China -- than Hong Kong director?Johnnie To's narco-thriller "Drug War," ?which opened in China last week and features scenes of a policeman snorting cocaine, righteous police detectives getting brutally killed, and the antagonist being given the death penalty by lethal injection. "This kind of non-uniform, lying-with-eyes-wide-open, approve-and-rescind censorship is undoubtedly making (the system) a big pile of dog s---," he wrote.

Why is Lazaro still on 'American Idol'?!

By Craig Berman, TODAY cover

Michael Becker / FOX

Lazaro Arbos is the last man standing on "American Idol," while five talented women are still competing.

Every good TV show needs comic relief, and for ?American Idol,? that story line this season is the continued survival of Lazaro Arbos ... and how much that exasperates mentor Jimmy Iovine.

It?s fair to say Lazaro hasn?t been the best of the men, at least not since the finals began. As an individual, at best he was behind Burnell Taylor, though Burnell was the singer shown the door last week. But that understates the problems Lazaro?s had on the live shows.

As a member of a duet or group, Lazaro has made history as arguably the worst team player ever, dropping lyrics two weeks in a row and counting on his partners to pick up the slack. Angie Miller was able to smooth things over in their duet last week, but the Burnell-Lazaro-Devin Velez fiasco two weeks ago was legendary in its awfulness. When he?s onstage with others, the show reverts back to those dreaded Hollywood group performances where the only reason to watch is the trainwreck potential.

One reader noted that the issue may be Lazaro?s Latin roots, and the possibility that his background makes him less familiar with the songs he?s assigned to sing. That?s fine, but based on the post-performance interviews, it seems like nobody really knows these artists, which says a lot for the state of music education. Everyone else has to sing genres they?re uncomfortable with, but they're at least professional enough to learn the words.

Arming Cable Against the Open Internet - NYTimes.com

Cable television companies are distressed about how quickly Internet and mobile viewing are stealing customers. Now, technology firms want to sell them ways to offer the personal choice of mobile, while justifying the goodies that come to someone who pays for a subscription.

Companies as diverse as Cisco Systems, known for enterprise networking equipment, and Adobe, with its origins in graphics, are working closely with cable companies and other broadcasters to deal with competition from Internet broadcasting. They don?t want people to stop watching video on their phones, or away from their living room boxes, but they do want to control it.

?All the cable companies recognize that there is a fundamental shift in video consumption, driven by device proliferation and broadband over the air,? said Jeremy Helfand, vice president for video at Adobe. ?They have gone from a fear of cannibalizing their business to looking for opportunities for revenue growth.?

What the cable providers do not have is a strong background in managing people across many different devices, or creating an Internet experience that is attractive for the extras it offers subscribers.

?Our customers are all contending with the cloud,? said Marthin de Beer, the head of Cisco?s video and collaboration group. ?Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Apple TV ? all of these ?over the top? video companies don?t own a network, they ride on top of other people?s networks.?

As a result, he said, the cable companies, which count on subscriber income to sustain their networks, ?are stepping up, delivering a lot of new experiences to slow down the cord-cutting.?

Cisco offers connections into the network, through devices like mobile phones or tablets, that enable cable customers to watch shows anywhere, record programs to watch when they return home or get extras not available with standard shows. People will still connect their mobile devices over the Internet, but with a separate log-in that will have access to the benefits.

Later this year Cox, the large cable provider, will offer its subscribers a mobile app with access to 40,000 hours of content from the Cox library. Subscribers to premium services like HBO will be able to open the HBO app within the Cox app, where they can get extras like maps of the lands in ?Game of Thrones.? The idea is to keep viewers inside the Cox environment as much as possible. Cisco has to manage all the rights and security through its network.

?We?re interested in what customers are telling us is important,? said Len Barlik, Cox?s chief product officer. ?It boils down to making the experience more personal, at home or outside. They view it as their content.?

Cox is also testing a high-speed wireless service over metropolitan areas, available to its Internet subscribers. Cisco hopes eventually to offer premium subscribers faster wireless speeds and better video quality, depending on what they pay.

Much of this is possible now for a number of reasons. Last year Cisco paid $5 billion for NDS, a maker of software for cable systems, which it has incorporated with its network security and authorization products. Perhaps more important, cable companies are feeling the heat like never before; Mr. de Beer said 10 million people watched the most recent Super Bowl on devices like personal computers, phones and tablets.

On Wednesday at the National Association of Broadcasters? video trade show in Las Vegas, Adobe is introducing Adobe Primetime, a TV platform for programmers and cable companies. Comcast and NBC Sports have been working with Adobe on it.

Adobe entered the online marketing and Web analytics business with its acquisition of Omniture in 2009, and also provides the plumbing for lots of over-the-top video through its flash technology. Primetime is an effort to track online video viewing the way Web surfing is watched, and includes personalized ads.

?Cable proved that people will pay for video and tolerate ads,? Mr. Helfand said. On Internet videos, he said, ?the ad experience of prerolls interferes with the experience.?

As with Cisco, Adobe?s most valuable offering to cable providers is management of all the different traffic, since different device configurations and operating systems, like Google?s Android and Apple?s iOS, have different requirements. Like Cisco, Adobe offers a subscriber authentication system, as well as ways to segment audiences, and serve different ads in live, on-demand and streaming shows over mobile devices.

Daimler to revise forecasts amid tough markets

BERLIN (AP) ? German automaker Daimler is warning shareholders it expects 2013 to be difficult and that it may have to reassess its earnings expectations.

CEO Dieter Zetsche said in remarks prepared for the company's annual shareholder meeting Wednesday that "not much tailwind is anticipated from the markets in the coming months."

Daimler in February reported 2012 net profit of 6.5 billion euros ($8.5 billion) and forecast flat underlying earnings for 2013.

But because of the market situation, particularly in Europe, Zetsche said the company will "reassess whether its previous market-related assumptions for 2013 are still valid." Further details will be provided alongside first-quarter results.

Even though Daimler is set to revise its outlook, its share price was up 2 percent at 41.70 euros after the company said first quarter sales were.
