Second-gen IOIO in the works: embraces the wireless revolution, cuts cost

Second-gen IOIO in the works, embraces the wireless revolution

Ytai Ben-Tsvi's IOIO board is quite the hit with the Android-hacking DIY crowd. But, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement on the $50 dev board. A second-gen version is in the works that adds the ability to connect to a computer as a USB device (not just as a host) or via Bluetooth, without the need for a intermediary controller like an Arduino. Perhaps most exciting for those interested in tinkering with DIY Android phone accessories, is the plan to cut the price of the new IOIO. How much less the next version will cost isn't clear yet, but even just $5 could make a major difference. For more details check out Ytai's blog post at the source link.

Arctic bacteria help in the search to find life on moon Europa

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

In a fjord in Canada scientists have found a landscape similar to one of Jupiter's icy moons: Europa. It consists of a frozen and sulphurous environment, where sulphur associated with Arctic bacteria offer clues for the upcoming missions in the search for traces of life on Europa.

It is not easy to find a place on Earth where ice and sulphur come together, supposedly like on Europa, Jupiter's moon. Nonetheless, this place has been located at Borup Fjord Pass in the Canadian High Arctic. Here the sulphurous yellow emissions contrast with the whiteness of the environment, creating images similar to those captured at Jupiter's satellite.

US researchers have now verified that the sulphur involved in the life cycle of Arctic microorganisms has some characteristics that could help to detect biological remains on Europa. Large space agencies like NASA and the European Space Agency are already in the process of preparing missions.

"We have discovered that elemental sulphur (S) can contain morphological, mineralogical and organic 'biosignatures' linked to bacterial activity. If they are found on Europa, this would suggest the possible presence of microorganisms," as explained to SINC by Damhnait Gleeson, lead author of the study and currently member of the Centro de Astrobiologia (INTA-CSIC, Spain).

The 'biosignatures' are associated with needle and rhomboid sulphur shapes in which mineralised remains of microorganisms and extracellular material appears. Thanks to electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques, the formation of a rare type of sulphur has also been observed in association with organic components: the rosickyite. What is more is that small quantities (parts per million) of protein, fatty acids and other biomolecules have appeared in the sulphurous material.

"There is much evidence of bacterial activity," highlights Gleeson, who wonder if in the Europa's icy crust, or the ocean or lakes supposedly beneath it, there could be a similar microbial community that uses sulphur as their source of energy.

The researcher conducted the study, which has now been published in the Astrobiology journal, as a member of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Colorado in the USA. She is currently working as a scientist in the Centro de Astrobiologia in R?o Tinto (Spain), a place similar to Mars.

Gardening by Accident and Intention |

My hubby was working his way down his household to do list and decided it would be a good idea to replant the grass in the backyard so it would be ?just like a putting green?.? An ambitious goal for sure, since considering at the time of statement the yard looked like a muddy pit.

On the chosen afternoon, while backing the SUV down the driveway with the rented rototiller in the back?and the rear hatch open, he backed it up alright ? right into the jut out of the house and shattered the back window of the car.

Since the car was not in a condition to be driven, he could not return rototiller in a timely way.? Having a rototiller on hand gave him a new idea; a section of the back yard destined for an ornamental lawn became a garden. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, or in this case: tomatoes, oregano, basil, thyme, eggplant, squash, cucumber, strawberries, and pumpkins.

A ?growing body? of research shows that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health and preventing cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.? Most people need to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables they currently eat every day, and although the ideal amount of fruits and vegetables consumed depends upon the age and activity level of the person, the equivalent of seven to nine servings per day of a variety of fruits and vegetables is probably ideal.

Living in a neighborhood where grocery stores are plentiful and access to the farmers? markets is easy, I never gave any consideration to growing my own food. Yet with increasing concern over how food is grown and transported, I must say that I have become much picker over the years regarding my foods? source of origin.

Vegetable Garden Basics:

Where:? Planning a garden near your home in full sunlight is the normally the preferred location, however, drainage, soil quality, and shade from buildings or trees must be considered.? A growing vegetable garden must have at least six hours of full sun each day; fertilizer can?t compensate for lack of sun exposure and water. Usually, the garden should be surrounded by a removable fence with close mesh to keep out pets, and wild animals.? A fence also can serve as a trellis for beans, peas, and tomatoes ? plants that need supports to grow. Raised beds will keep the soil warmer.

What:?? Choosing which vegetables depend upon one?s personal preference, although lettuce, tomatoes, beans, and squash are popular choices for plantings at this time of year.

When:? Now (after the last frost is a general guideline ? but May is always a popular planting time).

How:? Ah like so many things the devil is in the details! One has to plan the garden, prepare the soil (testing and adjusting the soil PH), in addition to? paying? attention to the plant spacing, the depths of the plantings and germination times, while always being wary of insects and weeds.

Gardens and Children

Give your garden some thought, but not too much though, because like raising children, there will always be unexpected challenges along with the anticipation of joy.? You live by your experiences, and in growing a vegetable garden, like raising children, the more experiences the better.?? The saying ?you reap what you sow? applies both to harvests and families. Taking care and comfort in knowing that your dedicated attention will likely produce amazing? results both outside and inside your home for the health of your family. ?One has to be ?hands on? when both gardening and parenting because it is important to both the process and the outcome for each?multifaceted activity. So go ahead, plant a garden for health, and watch your family grow in many ways.

Guinea-Bissau rambles on, despite coup

(AP) ? Campaign banners from an election that was violently interrupted still hang in the main thoroughfare of this steamy capital, a reminder that a stable government is far from the country's grasp.

Guinea-Bissau was just weeks away from holding a presidential runoff election when soldiers attacked the front-runner's home in April and arrested him along with the country's interim president. To the 1.5 million residents of this tiny, coastal nation, it spelled yet another upheaval in a history full of them.

No leader in nearly 40 years of independence has finished his time in office in Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony on Africa's western coast that has long been plagued by coups.

It comes perhaps as no surprise then that people here are complacent about the latest move by the junta. While the international community has loudly condemned the latest power grab, Bissau-Guineans have had little time to mourn yet another aborted attempt at establishing democracy, worried instead by how to make ends meet during their country's latest political spasm.

A lone sign hangs from a pedestrian overpass in downtown Bissau urging: "Mobilize yourselves! Demonstrate! We are a Democracy!" Most, though, are simply doing their best just to walk across that bridge to make a living each day.

Public workers didn't receive their salaries last month on payday, just after the coup. It's still unclear whether anyone will receive their salaries for May, and the hardship compounds life for those who depend on others getting paid.

Cadidjoto Seide, 28, supports her three children by selling a local milk dish along the roadside. In the months before the coup, she could sometimes make up to 5,000 francs ($10) a day, though much of that would go toward her transport costs. Since the coup, she's lucky to make 1,500 ($3), she says.

"It's really difficult at the moment just to survive," she says, watching commuter buses whirl by her stand in the main market downtown.

The April coup began on a Friday afternoon, just 17 days before the country's runoff election. The first round of voting had largely been described as free and fair, and former Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Jr. was leading by a wide margin, making his victory all but sure. By the night of April 12, the military had blocked off the roads to the candidate's house, and were lobbing grenades at his villa.

Now Gomes has fled the country, and it appears less likely each day that he will ever return.

The country's chances of ridding itself of military intervention are slim, given a booming cocaine trade that has turned Guinea-Bissau into a narcostate, fueled by trans-Atlantic drug shipments bound for Europe. Key members of the military have been named as complicit in the trade, including several army and navy chiefs who are now on the United States' "drug kingpin" list. The infusion of illicit cash has emboldened an already bloated army. Drugs, observers say, played a role in the recent coup.

"All the intelligence Portugal possesses clearly indicates that one of the factors behind the coup was drug-trafficking," Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Portas told reporters in Lisbon after meeting with Gomes, who exiled himself there.

"Either Guinea-Bissau becomes a state based on the rule of law, or it will be held ransom by a certain military clique that is open to the drug trade," said Portas.

Gomes told Portuguese radio station TSF that the international community must ostracize the coup leaders by imposing sanctions. Foreign pressure "has to be made to produce results." He added that he had unofficial information that a coup was brewing, but armed forces chiefs "categorically denied" they were planning an uprising when he confronted them. He added that he was not afraid to return to Bissau, but more than six weeks after the coup, the candidate is still an ocean away.

The election was clearly a vote some did not want him to win. Observers say Gomes had become a divisive figure within national politics long before the run-up to the election. Then when military leaders feared Gomes was secretly trying to overhaul the military with help from Angolan soldiers, they burst into action and arrested him.

Even West African regional mediators are backing a one-year transitional government that does not include him in it.

Critics believe the plan by West African regional bloc ECOWAS to now support the junta-initiated transitional government all but legitimizes the military coup. But ECOWAS Commissioner Salamatu Hussaini-Suleiman, has told the U.N. Security Council that immediately restoring the constitutional order that existed before the coup could lead to civil war.

In an effort to put the country back on track, ECOWAS this month began sending a contingent of peacekeepers, who will replace the Angolan troops formerly stationed here, whose presence had become a source of conflict with the military at large.

For now, it seems that the military has gotten away once again with meddling in the country's politics. In 2009, soldiers assassinated then-president Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, in an unsolved murder that was also rumored to have been linked to the drug trade.

There is next-to-no military presence in the streets of Bissau, which have turned to a river of red mud since the first storms of the rainy season. The army does not need to patrol the streets, because despite the posters encouraging an uprising, people are too beaten down to stand up to the latest military incursion.

In Guinea-Bissau, citizens seem willing to give the junta or a transitional government a chance ? if it means restoring some economic stability.

Carlos Hussein Ajau, 62, has lived through it all: Portuguese colonialism, the war for independence, the country's civil war and its successive coups and political assassinations. The last few weeks have been difficult for his business ? no one even has money to change.

"The situation is not good, but we in Guinea-Bissau are used to it," he says.

Behind the Death-Defying, Record-Setting Wingsuit Jump

At around 3 pm this Wednesday, the renowned BASE jumper Jeb Corliss should have been zipping himself into a wingsuit. He should have boarded a black helicopter, flown up to 2400 feet, and jumped out. He should have spread his arms and legs, turning the suit?s nylon panels into wings, and streaked through the skies like a missile. And most of all, he should have been the one to finally shatter limits of flight and human mortality as he became the first wingsuit pilot to jump from an aircraft and land without the help of a parachute.

But it wasn't so. The feat has long been Corliss?s most cherished ambition (see the 2010 Popular Mechanics cover story about his plans) and almost nobody else on earth possesses the requisite skill and audacity to pull it off. But Corliss was at home in southern California on Wednesday, transfixed like any other spectator as an Internet video feed showed a 42-year-old British man named Gary Connery nabbing the coveted record by plunging into a landing pad of cardboard boxes.

The achievement wasn?t quite the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk or Chuck Yeager in his X-1. But a chute-less wingsuit landing has long a been a major goal of Corliss and a handful of the world?s other top wingsuit pilots?few of whom, apparently, had even heard of Connery until a couple of months ago. When Corliss first caught of wind of Connery?s plans, he suspected it was an April Fool?s joke. When he realized that this wasn?t the case, he thought that Connery "was absolutely insane. I genuinely believed that what he was going for was impossible," Corliss tells PM.

Corliss?s own vision for the wingsuit landing project had been to build a 2000-foot long ramp, attach it to the side of a Las Vegas hotel, and touch down from his flight like a ski jumper in the Olympics?only he?d be doing 100 mph and landing on his torso rather than on his legs. It was to be a multimillion-dollar spectacle backed by corporate sponsors with warehouses of cash. But the companies Corliss approached didn?t want to fork over the funds, especially for an endeavor that might end in human pancake. Connery?s wife, Vivienne, says that he met with similar resistance from would-be sponsors and realized that he?d have to devise a cheaper, down-and-dirty approach. He needed to hack the wingsuit landing.

The inspiration came from Connery?s day job. He?s a stunt man who wrecks cars and leaps from great heights in television shows and movies such as The Beach and the Bond flick Die Another Day. With this professional background, Connery brought fresh thinking to the challenge. "Jeb has more expertise in wingsuits than Gary," Vivienne Connery says, "but what Gary was able to lend to this project was a more overall generic knowledge of how people fall."

When Gary Connery?s cinematic stunt work requires him to plunge from the top of a building, he knows that his body accelerates to around 60 mph. To hit the ground without injuring or killing himself, he builds a surprisingly rudimentary landing pad?a big pile of empty cardboard boxes. A speed of 60 mph is also about how fast Connery flies in a wingsuit, and you can guess how his thinking progressed. "Gary said, "Let?s just put a bunch of cardboard boxes in a field, and I?ll fly into them,?" says Mark Sutton, the project manager and aerial videographer for the wingsuit landing.

So, instead of investing $3 million on a landing ramp in Vegas, Connery spent only ?22,000 pounds ($35,000) to buy 18,500 cardboard boxes. On Wednesday he and his friends and family members set them up in a field by the River Thames about 40 miles west of London. There was a bottom layer of 2-by-2-by-2-foot boxes, a middle one of 3-by-3-by-3s, and a top layer of 4-by-3-by-3s. The finished landing strip measured 350 feet long, 40 feet wide, and 12 feet high?enormous, unless you?re squinting at it from more than a mile away in a helicopter.

If there was doubt in Connery?s mind before he leapt, it wasn?t about whether the boxes would sufficiently cushion his landing, it was whether he?d manage to land on the boxes at all. Connery and Sutton had been training for months, analyzing GPS tracks of Connery?s flights to determine the exact glide ratio?about 2.1 feet forward for every 1 foot down?he would need to maintain to hit the landing zone. In training flights on Tuesday, using parachutes to safely bail out at the very end, Connery and Sutton were stymied by headwinds. "We landed in the field several times, as in well short," Sutton says.

The conditions were suboptimal when Connery launched the actual record-setting flight. "There was a headwind . . . [and] I was being tossed around by the turbulence," Connery wrote on Thursday, communicating by text message from a television show set where he was doing stunt work. But he managed to hit the boxes successfully, and minutes later, totally uninjured, he was hugging his wife and treating a crush of television reporters to a shower of champagne. "Everybody doubted that Gary?s flight was possible, but as we now know, his confidence was perfectly placed," Sutton says.

Corliss, for his part, calls Connery?s flight "the greatest stunt ever performed," and says that he bears no ill will toward the man who stole his dream. "I go by the Samurai code?if you are vanquished by your enemy, you must give him respect," Corliss says. "There?s nothing I can say other than, ?Congratulations, bro.?"

Can online video marketing rescue businesses from google's panda ...

With the recent updates and changes coming out of global search engine Google, the online world has had to review their marketing methods across the board. Many traditional techniques of gaining rank position and driving web traffic have become redundant. This has caused businesses worldwide to re-evaluate their SEO and web strategies. Director of Melbourne Video Production, David Jenyns explains how businesses must diversify to survive these changes.

Melbourne, Victoria (PRWEB) May 26, 2012

A large proportion of the online community became unsettled last year when Google released their ?Panda? update. The update upset the order of how SEO (Search Engine Optimization) impacts a website?s search ranking. The release came out to eliminate irrelevant and spam-related results, but it affected most businesses ? good and bad ? and somewhat levelled the playing field. With a level of uncertainty, business owners did their best to adapt to the changes. After ?patching up the holes?, everything seemed to go back to normal.

Google then released ?Penguin? within the last few weeks. This new update shook the online world again. Many methods that website owners and SEO marketers had implemented over the years to earn their search engine ranking had now been made ineffective.

?These updates affect so many businesses? says David Jenyns, Marketing, SEO and online video marketing expert, ?and if they don?t take action to defend themselves, it can ? and will ? happen again.?

Jenyns, known SEO teacher and director of Melbourne Video Productions could see this progression coming. ?Google holds the key to a business?s success or failure online? he says, ?and using strictly SEO is like having all your eggs in one basket ? you can?t chance it, you must diversify.?

Jenyns continues, ?A lot of people don?t realize how easy it is to spread their marketing dollars around. For example, Youtube gets 4 billion global video views everyday ? so what does that say about your audience? It says they love web video.?

The statistics prove online video marketing?s influence is farther reaching than first thought. Earlier this year, a Bright Roll survey found that 65% of marketers plan to reallocate their campaigning dollars from TV to online video. While a quarter of those marketers see online and mobile video as the two areas that will gain the largest spend increase over the next two years.

With this knowledge, David Jenyns says ?It?s time for classic SEO, web video and real world marketing to be integrated together to level the playing field for online businesses.?

He continues, ?we recently placed a physical QR Code for one of my clients, The Dentists, near their business location, on a busy public sidewalk.? A QR (Quick Response) Code looks like a barcode, except it holds a larger amount of data that can lead to websites, web videos or other information.

Jenyns then says, ?passersby can?t help themselves because it says Bored? Scan This ? the curiosity gets the better of them. They then use their smartphone to scan the code, and they get introduced to The Dentists via web video, as they stand on the street.?

?Businesses really need to move forward with their marketing? says Jenyns, and his company Melbourne Video Productions offers easy, end-to-end services for those who want to make gains in the current online market, and protect themselves from any uncertainty ahead.

(AP) ? Israelis are gearing up to get down at Madonna's show as the pop diva landed in the holy land ahead of her world tour which kicks off here next week.

The Material girl's motorcade entered the Tel Aviv Dan hotel parking lot Friday as guards shielded the superstar from the media.

Scrapbooking ? Writing A Letter To The Future | Clutch Magazine

While having dinner with a friend, we got on the subject of scrapbooking. She said that she went to a scrapbooking party (which are called ?crops?) and all of the women were ?80 something.? Scrapbooking has long been considering a grandma?s hobby and to be more specific a white woman?s activity. So how did I find myself in this foreign world 10 years ago? Especially since I didn?t have any children.

One of my family members passed away, and we were looking through the shoe boxes of faded photographs. She had taken the liberty of recording some of the basics: names and ages on the back of the photos. But the majority of the photos were not labeled, or the labels had been rubbed off. It became a game to try to guess which of her children was posing in the photo. We certainly couldn?t tell where exactly the photo had been taken as it is nearly impossible to differentiate a tree in Arkansas from a tree in Missouri. It was at that moment that I decided I wanted to be a scrapbooker. I wanted to preserve not only the photos ? but the stories.

We?ve all been to an older person?s home. They usually have a ton of dusty frames on bookshelves. There are volumes of old photo albums; you know, the ones where the photo clings to the page. There are always the classic photos of the military men, the proms, and the grandchildren. If we look closer, the older person starts talking about the history: ?that is your great uncle ?? or ?your second cousin ?.? After about 10 ? 15 minutes, you learn something new about your family that you didn?t know before. African American culture is an oral culture, so most of our cultural history has been transported by word of mouth. I feared that, if I didn?t start writing things down certain, memories would be lost.

Although I don?t have any children of my own yet, ?memory keeping has been an essential part of my life because it helps me to keep things in perspective. In this society where materialism reigns supreme, it can be easy to lose site of all of the things we have accomplished: graduating from high school, graduating from college, and being gainfully employed.?In December of 2011, I lost my first child due to a miscarriage at 5 months, and it was through my scrapbooks that I prayed for myself and memorialized my unborn baby girl. I was able to light my way out of the darkness.

It also helps me to live a more mindful life. I notice things that float across most people?s heads. From the flowers that bloomed a bit too early because of the record high weather we had in March to the way my step daughter tilts her head when it?s time to take a picture, it?s all recorded. She has ?mastered? the art of posing at four.

Finally, it is my ?paper trail.? When I am no longer walking this earth, someone will be able to follow the love story, first hand, that my husband and I share through the post cards that we exchange when he travels for work. Someone will be able to read about historical events because I include articles from newspapers and magazines in my albums; for example, an article about Mayor Daley retiring from Chicago after 20+ years in office or the Trayvon Martin case.? My children and grandchildren will be able to see not only the type of woman that I was, but they will have an alternative view on some of the events that they will hear about in history classes.

Similar to quilts, journals, and letter writing, scrapbooking allows us to affirm ourselves, literally leaving a legacy for the future.

(AP) ? Inspectors have located radioactive traces at an Iranian underground bunker, the U.N. atomic agency said Friday ? a finding that could mean Iran has moved closer to reaching the uranium threshold needed to arm nuclear missiles.

In a report obtained by The Associated Press, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it was asking Tehran for a full explanation. But the report was careful to avoid any suggestion that Iran was intentionally increasing the level of its uranium enrichment, noting that Tehran said a technical glitch was responsible.

Analysts as well as diplomats who had told the AP of the existence of the traces before publication of the confidential report also said the higher-enriched material could have been a mishap involving centrifuges over-performing as technicians adjusted their output rather than a dangerous step toward building a bomb.

Still, the finding was bound to resonate among the 35 IAEA board members for whom the report was prepared, among them the six world powers that had just concluded talks with Iran on its enrichment activities. The negotiations in Baghdad left the two sides still far apart over how to oversee Tehran's atomic program but resolved to keep dialogue going next month in Moscow as an alternative to possible military action.

The report also expressed in opaque terms what diplomats accredited to the IAEA first started mentioning more than a month ago: The agency fears a massive cleanup under way at buildings at the Parchin military complex southeast of Tehran. The site is suspected of housing a pressure chamber and related equipment used to test ways of detonating a nuclear charge.

"Based on satellite imagery at this location ... the buildings of interest to the agency are now subject to extensive activities that could hamper the agency's ability to undertake effective verification" at the site, said the report. Separately, a senior international official familiar with the issue said satellite photos showed trucks at the site and streams of liquid suggesting the interiors were being hosed down to wash away evidence of possible nuclear-related work.

The report said that over the past five months the agency had "obtained more information" buttressing its suspicions about the Parchin site, which it has asked repeatedly to visit, only to be turned down by Iran.

On enrichment, the six world powers trying to engage Iran are already concerned about its output of uranium at the 20 percent level because material that high can be turned into weapons-grade much more quickly than its main, low-enriched stockpile.

The higher the enrichment, the easier it becomes to re-enrich uranium to warhead quality at 90 percent. As a result, the finding of traces at 27 percent at the Fordo enrichment plant in central Iran sparked international interest.

Iran denies any plans to possess nuclear weapons but has for years declined offers of reactor fuel from abroad, including more recent inducements of 20-percent material if it stops producing at that level. The Islamic Republic says it wants to continue producing 20 percent uranium to fuel its research reactor and for medical purposes.

But its refusal to accept foreign offers has increased fears it may want to turn its enrichment activities toward producing such arms. The concerns have been fed by IAEA suspicions that Iran has experimented on components of an atomic arms program ? suspicions Tehran also denies.

The report cited a May 9 letter from Iranian officials suggesting any enrichment at 27 percent was inadvertent. The letter said the particles were produced "above the target value" and could have been for "technical reasons beyond the operator's control."

David Albright, whose Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security looks for signs of proliferation, said a new configuration at Fordo means it tends to "overshoot 20 percent" at the start.

"Nonetheless, embarrassing for Iran," he wrote in an email to the AP.

Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Program of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, described such a surge as a "naturally occurring development," adding that "it's very usual" to go above envisaged enrichment levels at startups of centrifuges.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said "there are a number of possible explanations for this, including the one that the Iranians have provided. But we are going to depend on the IAEA to get to the bottom of it."

Others were more skeptical.

"It's not surprising because they have the technology," a senior Israeli defense official said.

"Iran doesn't intend to stop its nuclear weapon program, and the fact that they are at 27 percent shows the Iranian intentions," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to speak with the media.

International concerns have increased since Iran started higher enrichment at Fordo, which is carved into a mountain to make it impervious to attack. Israel and the United States have not ruled out using force as a last option if diplomacy fails to curb the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Iran already has about 700 centrifuges churning out 20-percent enriched uranium at Fordo. The report noted that although Iran has set up about 350 more centrifuges since late last year at the site, these machines are not enriching.

While the reason for that could be purely technical, it could also be a signal from Tehran that it is waiting for progress in the negotiations.

The latest attempt to persuade Iran to compromise ended inconclusively Thursday after two days of talks in Baghdad. The six world powers ? the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ? failed to persuade Tehran to freeze its 20 percent enrichment.

Iran, for its part, failed to persuade the West to scale back on recently toughened sanctions, which have targeted Iran's critical oil exports and have effectively blackballed the country from international banking networks. The 27-nation European Union is set to ban all Iranian fuel imports on July 1, shutting the door on about 18 percent of Iran's market.

But the IAEA report did detail some progress in separate talks between the U.N. nuclear agency and Iran that the agency hopes will re-launch a long-stalled probe into the suspicions that Tehran has worked on nuclear-weapons related experiments.

The report said that since 2002, the IAEA "has become increasingly concerned about the possible existence in Iran of undisclosed nuclear-related activities involving military-related organizations, including activities related to the development of a nuclear payload."

Without more openness on the part of Iran, said the report, the IAEA "cannot conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama delivered his harshest rebuttal yet to rival Mitt Romney on Thursday, dismissing his challenger's claims as "a cowpie of distortions" while seeking to rekindle the all-but-faded Iowa magic that launched him in 2008. Escalating his criticism of Romney's background as a venture capitalist, Obama said it wasn't adequate preparation for the presidency.

"There may be value for that kind of experience, but it's not in the White House," Obama said.

The speech, to a cheering Iowa crowd of about 2,500 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, represented a new intensity for Obama's campaign as Romney begins to hit his stride carrying the Republican standard. It came as Iowa, soured by the direction of the nation and its economy, has drifted away from Obama since his 2008 caucus victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton made him the Democratic front-runner.

While Obama carried the state in the general election by a comfortable margin that year, polls this year have shown voters narrowly preferring Romney, who plans to wage his own major effort in Iowa.

Trying to cast Romney as out of touch with working-class voters, Obama declared that hard work hasn't led to higher incomes. "Higher profits haven't led to better jobs," he said. "And you can't solve that problem if you can't even see that it's a problem."

Obama pointedly chose the same turf where Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, once declared that corporations are people. Obama said Romney would roll back regulations and return to policies that he said helped create the recession and would increase government deficits.

Reacting to Romney's charge last week that Obama had created "a prairie fire of debt," the president countered that Romney's tax plan is "like trying to put out a prairie fire with some gasoline."

In a statement issued after the speech, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said: "A president who broke his promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term has no standing when it comes to fiscal responsibility."

Earlier, in blue-collar Newton, Iowa, once the prosperous headquarters of Maytag appliances, Obama visited a wind-turbine plant to push his alternative energy agenda and delivered a message that could as well have applied to all of Iowa. "Yeah, we're facing tough times, but we're getting through them, we're getting though them together," he said.

While offering only six of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, how Iowa voters ultimately judge Obama is expected to be an important factor in the race.

"Last time it was a lot more exciting. It was a new thing," said Nancy Bobo, a Des Moines Obama volunteer and one of his earliest Iowa backers in 2008. "Today, we're all just very serious."

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has made the struggling economy the centerpiece of his campaign. But Obama can point to comparatively low 5.1 percent unemployment in Iowa, where stable financial services and strong agriculture sectors buoyed the economy while manufacturing has struggled to rebound.

Romney had made the comment about corporations as he argued against raising taxes as a way of shoring up Social Security and Medicare. Members of the audience interrupted, calling for increased taxes on corporations, and Romney responded: "Corporations are people, my friend. ... Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."

The comment has been used by opponents to characterize Romney, a former private equity firm executive, as more comfortable in the boardroom than the shop floor.

Obama's campaign has emphasized episodes in which Romney's former firm closed plants and laid off workers, and has aired a stinging TV ad on the subject in Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

In his fairgrounds' speech Thursday, Obama said private-equity firms can sometimes create jobs. "But when maximizing short-term gains for your investors rather than building companies that last is your goal," he added, "then sometimes it goes the other way. Workers get laid off. Benefits disappear. Pensions are cut. Factories go dark."

Obama himself has struggled to attract blue-collar voters, keys to winning struggling swing working-class regions such as southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania and rural Iowa. Newton is the seat of Jasper County, Iowa, where unemployment was 7.1 percent in April, higher than Iowa's average but down sharply from last winter.

While Iowa is known for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, it also is a coveted general election state, despite its small electoral total. Democrat Al Gore carried the state by less than a percentage point in 2000, followed by Republican George W. Bush's 2-point victory in 2004.

Obama has already spent more than $2.6 million on advertising, a pace as aggressive as in any other battleground state. He's been a regular visitor, and was making his second trip in a month.

Yet the president's approval rating here has been stuck below 50 percent for over two years, softened in part by criticism from Republicans campaigning for Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Polls show Iowans also have become increasingly bothered by federal spending, an issue Romney stoked in Des Moines last week in a visit where he promised to shrink the deficit.

Iowans, many of whom met Obama in the 2008 campaign, also are disappointed by what they hoped would be a transcendent presidency, said J. Ann Selzer, the longtime director of The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.

"You hear disaffection. You hear them say, 'This isn't what I paid for,'" Selzer said. "The guy they sent there to recast things wasn't able to do it."

Privately updating Senate Democrats on Thursday, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the president has several possible paths to collecting the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory in November. But he noted that Romney, the Republican Party and allied super PACs are likely to have a great deal of money to spend. Obama vastly outspent Republican John McCain in winning the White House four years ago, an advantage that Democrats appear unlikely to command in 2012.

Romney senses the opening. He too has cultivated an Iowa network. Indeed, he campaigned aggressively for the 2008 caucuses during his narrowly losing bid for the state's delegates. Romney and the Republican National Committee have hired state directors and are hiring staff to run a dozen or more offices planned for Iowa.

And his campaign has begun running television ads in Iowa.
