In a humble speech amid tense times, Asghar Farhadi accepted Iran's first Oscar for best foreign film as a chance to celebrate a culture "hidden under the heavy dust of politics."

It was a stirring reminder, instantly hailed at the Los Angeles ceremony and around the globe, of the human side behind rising geopolitical animosity.

The acclaimed domestic drama "A Separation" is the first Iranian film to win the award. The only other Iranian movie ever nominated was 1997's "Children of Heaven," which was defeated by Italy's "Life Is Beautiful."

Writer-director Farhadi alluded to the tensions over his home country.

Amid talk of "war, intimidation and aggression" among politicians, he said, Iran is "spoken here through her glorious culture, a rich and ancient culture that has been hidden under the heavy dust of politics."

With his daughter, Sarina Farhadi, who co-stars in the film, looking on from the audience, Farhadi added: "I proudly offer this award to the people of my country, the people who respect all cultures and civilizations and despise hostility and resentment."

Tensions between the West and Iran have risen in recent months over Tehran's nuclear program. Iran denies Western claims that it seeks to develop atomic weapons, and says its disputed nuclear program is designed to produce energy and medical isotopes.

But Iranian cinema has for years been among the most exciting in the world, notably including the films of Abbas Kiarostami and Majid Majidi.

The widely-hailed "A Separation" was so roundly supported by the academy that it was also nominated for a best screenplay Oscar ? a rarity for a foreign film. It also won best foreign film at the Golden Globes.

Though the film, made under Iranian sensors, isn't overly political, it deeply explores the complex social and religious codes of contemporary Iranian society. The film begins with the divorce dispute between a husband (Peyman Moadi) and wife (Leila Hatami), a situation that becomes far thornier when an argument leads to criminal charges.

This year's Oscars took on a broadly international flavor, particularly given that the best picture favorite, "The Artist," is in most ways a French film, made by a French director (Michael Hazanavicius) and starring a French actor (Jean Dujardin).

The Mexican actor Demian Bichir was also nominated for best actor for his performance in the immigrant drama "A Better Life," and the Spanish film "Chico and Rita" was nominated for best animated film.

In all, 63 films were submitted for this year's foreign language film category, a nomination process that has often been criticized for leaving out critical favorites. In recent years, an executive committee was added to the multi-step process, which can add movies to those selected by the judging body.

Few founded major fault with this year's selections, though there were quibbles over the absence of the Turkish film "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia," the Finnish submission "Le Havre" and Pedro Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In," which Spain opted not to submit.

The other nominees were Michael R. Roskam's crime drama "Bullhead" from Belgium; Philippe Falardeau's immigrant substitute teacher tale "Monsieur Lazhar" from Canada; Joseph Cedar's Talmudic scholar saga "Footnote" from Israel; and Agnieszka Holland's World War II drama "In Darkness" from Poland.

Last year, Denmark's submission, "In a Better World," directed by Susanne Bier, was the winner.

Syria vote called a 'farce' by West

Syria heads to the polls today to vote on a new constitution, a move by embattled President Bashar al-Assad to defuse an uprising.

Syria's?authoritarian regime held a referendum on a new constitution Sunday, a gesture by embattled President Bashar al-Assad to placate those seeking his ouster. But the opposition deemed it an empty gesture and the West immediately dismissed the vote as a "sham."

Even as some cast ballots for what the government has tried to portray as reform, the military kept up shelling of the opposition stronghold of Homs, which has been under attack for more than three weeks after rebels took control of some neighborhoods there. Activists and residents report that hundreds have been killed in Homs in the past few weeks, including two Western journalists.

Activist groups said at least 29 people were killed on Sunday, mostly in Homs. At least 89 were reported killed on Saturday alone, one day before the referendum. Activists estimate close to 7,500 people have been killed in the 11 months since the Assad regime's brutal crackdown on dissent began.

"The referendum in?Syria?is nothing more than a farce," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said. "Sham votes cannot be a contribution to a resolution of the crisis. Assad must finally end the violence and clear the way for a political transition."

US, European, and Arab officials met Friday at a major international conference on the Syrian crisis in Tunisia, trying to forge a unified strategy to push Assad from power. They began planning a civilian peacekeeping mission to deploy after the regime falls.

"It is time for that regime to move on," President Barack Obama said Friday of Assad's rule. On Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Assad's crackdown belied promised reforms.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported intense clashes between troops and army defectors in the villages of Dael and Hirak in the province of Daraa, where the uprising started. The group also said explosions were heard in the village of Khirbet Ghazaleh and Naima as well as the provincial capital, Daraa.

The Observatory and other activist groups reported violence in several areas including Idlib, Homs and the eastern province of Deir el-Zour.

The two main umbrella opposition groups, the Syrian National Council and the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in?Syria, have called for a boycott. Other groups have called for a general strike.

"I am boycotting the vote," Syria-based activist Mustafa Osso told The Associated Press by phone. He added that previous "reforms" have made little difference. Assad's government revoked the country's official state of emergency in April, but the crackdown on dissent has only intensified.

'Wanderlust': The Reviews Are In!

Critics are a bit grossed out by the raunchy comedy but still charmed by leading man Paul Rudd.
By Kara Warner

Paul Rud and Jennifer Aniston in "Wanderlust"
Photo: Universal

Fans of the big-screen pairing of Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd have likely been waiting for the two likable actors to reunite since their 1998 romantic dramedy "The Object of My Affection." At long last, that wait is over with the release of "Wanderlust," a comedy in which Aniston and Rudd play a stressed-out Manhattan couple who end up traveling through a hippie-ish community that teaches them a lesson or two about what's really important in life.

The critical response is at 55 percent "Fresh" over at Rotten Tomatoes, with some folks enjoying the awkward humor and unflappable charm of Paul Rudd and others having issues with Rudd and Aniston's schtick. Read on as we frolic through the "Wanderlust" reviews!

The Irresistible Charm of Paul Rudd
"Paul Rudd is the best friend a movie comedy can have. He always delivers the goods and something extra, usually something wild and weirdly wonderful. In 'Wanderlust,' Rudd lets the funny fly. Like the movie he's in, Rudd only seems normal. Inside, it's all deliriously unhinged. Rudd plays George, an uptight Wall Street suit squeezed into a Manhattan micro-loft with his documentarian wife Linda (Jennifer Aniston) until the recession shuts them both down. Off they go to Georgia where his idiot brother (Ken Marino, the film's co-writer) offers him a job in his porta-potty business. Unacceptable. So George and Linda take shelter in Elysium, a commune where craziness reigns along with pot, acid, dodgy hygiene and free love. When the luscious Eva (Malin Akerman) offers to get it on with him, George unravels his straight laces. Here comes the Rudd time capsule moment: In a mirror, George rehearses talking dirty to Eva, taking the word 'dick' and stretching it into syllables of near-pornographic hilarity. It helps that Rudd is once again working with director and co-writer David Wain, as he did in 'Role Models' and the immortal 2001 indie 'Wet Hot American Summer.' " — Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Comedy and Quirk Factors
"In sophisticated comedy, what's funny is the tension between proper manners and the nasty or sexy subtext. Whereas in low comedy, there are no manners, and the nasty or sexy subtext is right there on the surface. And then there's 'Wanderlust,' in which the subtext is blasted through megaphones — the characters say so insanely much you want to scream. The satire is as broad as a battleship and equally bombarding. But it takes guts to do a comedy this big without gross-out slapstick, and the writers and the actors are all in. ... You say it sounds like a bunch of stereotypes — and 40-year-old stereotypes? The defense concedes the point. It's not fresh terrain. But this tribe of hippies is also a tribe of marvelously inventive comic actors doing a fair amount of inspired improvisation and grooving on the mindset." — David Edelstein, NPR

The Final Word, Pro-Con-Pro Style
"The role of an uptight fish out of water is what Rudd was born for, and he plays George with the congeniality and improvisatorial brio for which he's become deservedly famous. He and Theroux, who's barely recognizable beneath a thatch of long hair and a beard, deliver the most well-earned laughs in 'Wanderlust,' which otherwise traffics in tired jokes about menstrual cycles, placenta soup and rubbing your fingers together instead of clapping. ... Between this film and last summer's 'Horrible Bosses,' Aniston's coyness — starring in explicit movies without having to be explicit herself — seems to be becoming her stock in trade. It's not a particularly commendable one, and 'Wanderlust' does little to disprove that she's still a star more suited to TV rather than the big screen. As for Rudd, he still has charm to burn, even playing a type he's long since outgrown. Like George observing the overgrown children of Elysium, it might be time for Rudd to move on." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

"The production has all the style and subtlety — and, admittedly, the exuberance — of TV sketch material. A psychedelic sequence makes Madonna's halftime show look like high art. Both the straight and hippie realms are populated by parallel groups of fevered eccentrics; the cast includes Mr. Marino, Justin Theroux, Malin Akerman, Joe Lo Truglio, Kathryn Hahn, Kerri Kenney, Lauren Ambrose and Linda Lavin. Alan Alda is the commune's venerable founder, Carvin, whose brain long ago failed the acid test. 'Wanderlust' is nothing if not strenuous, strident and gross, and most of it fails the comedy test." — Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

"There are so many things to feel guilty about liking in the pure and prurient guilty pleasure that is 'Wanderlust.' Starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, this is a comedy of no manners about finding your bliss and escaping the modern grind. The laughter is served up naughty and nice, and frequently au naturel, earning it an R rating when perhaps RR (really raunchy) would have been more appropriate. Appropriateness, however, has pretty much been jettisoned by the filmmakers, who have opted instead for the good-fun-found-in-bad-taste tradition of 'The Hangover.' Directed by David Wain and co-written with his frequent comic collaborator, Ken Marino, the film is, overall, a very wobbly affair starting with all the dangling naked body parts that greet George (Rudd) and Linda (Aniston) when the couple pulls into a free-love commune they mistake for a B&B." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Iran blocks 30 million from Web ahead of election

By Alex Johnson, msnbc.com

With parliamentary elections?scheduled for?next week, Iran has begun blocking Internet services, Web security experts say, adding to concerns that?government leaders hope to?shut off Iranians from the rest of the online world.

The Tor Network, which provides free software for anonymous use of the Internet, reported that on Feb. 9, Tehran began filtering keywords and throttling or shutting down access to sites that use a form of?security called Secure Socket Layers, or SSL. The protocol, which encrypts data being sent back and forth between servers and users, is used by such popular sites as Gmail and Facebook. Web addresses protected by SSL begin "https," instead of "http."

Activists in repressive countries often use Tor services to get around such restrictions, and before Feb. 9, Iranians were the second-largest users of Tor. But because Iran targeted the core SSL protocol, "Tor stopped working too," the organization said.

The action is blocking email and some Web access for as many as 30 million Iranians who use SSL-protected sites, reported CBR Systems & Network Security, a European technology organization.

Iran, which will hold parliamentary elections?on March 2,?has referred to Google and other search engines as "spying tools," and it has throttled access to foreign web servers?previously at?politically sensitive times. The free-expression activist group Reporters Without Borders has branded Iran as an "enemy of the Internet." (.pdf)

Online journalists censored, attacked: report

Iran's Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taghipour said Monday that a firewalled "national Internet," which Tehran has been promising since as early as 2006, would be launched in the spring.?Internet security analysts and open-Internet activists say the "national Internet" would act as a closed intranet sealing Iranians off from large chunks of the web. Similar systems are known to be in use in China and North Korea.?

The Iranian news agency Mehr quoted Taghipour as saying at a cyberdefense forum in Tehran that "the first phase of this network will become operational in the month of Khordad," which straddles May and June.?

The Tor network said it was continuing "to research and investigate solutions with the assumption that SSL will eventually be blocked nationwide inside Iran."?

With The AT&T Deal Dead, T-Mobile Plans To Invest $4 Billion In Network Modernization And LTE

tmobile-girlIt would be fitting to say that T-Mobile was derailed from its path in 2011. The company's big break came in the form of a bid from AT&T to acquire the nation's number four (and magenta-clad) carrier, but then as quickly as it swept into existence, the deal fell through. Now, however, T-Mobile has a plan (the "Reinvigorated Challenger Strategy") to get back on track and "get the business back to growth," according to the release. This includes a $4 billion network modernization investment to evolve the carrier's 4G network and help prepare for T-Mo's LTE service in 2013.

In 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a qualified health claim recognizing that consuming most nuts, including almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.2 In addition, nearly two decades of research support the role of almonds in helping to maintain a healthy heart and healthy cholesterol levels.

"We know that consumers have relied on the American Heart Association's Heart-Check mark to easily identify heart-healthy foods for more than 15 years," said Dr. Rachel Johnson, Ph.D., R.D., the Bickford Green and Gold Professor of Nutrition at the University of Vermont and an American Heart Association spokesperson. "Adding nuts, fish and other foods that are rich sources of good fats, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, enhances the program and gives more healthy options consumers can choose with the same trust factor."

According to a survey of 500 health professionals, almonds are the nut they most recommend for heart health benefits.3

In order to qualify for the AHA Heart-Check mark, nuts (whole or chopped) must contain 4 g or less saturated fat per 50 g, less than 0.5 g trans fat per Reference Amount Customarily Consumed (RACC) and per label serving, 0 mg cholesterol per label serving, 140 mg or less sodium per label serving, less than 0.5 g added fats per RACC, and less than 1 g added carbohydrate per RACC. The amounts and sources of the added fats and carbohydrates must be disclosed.

In addition, foods must contain 10% or more of the Daily Value for at least one beneficial nutrient such as protein or dietary fiber per RACC.4

Per ounce, almonds provide 13 g of healthy unsaturated fat, only 1 g of saturated fat, and are naturally cholesterol-free. Almonds also deliver protein (6g), fiber (3.5g), calcium (75mg), vitamin E (7.4mg), riboflavin (0.3mg) and niacin (1mg), all of which contribute to a healthy heart.5

"Nutrition research has long supported the heart health benefits of almonds," says Jenny Heap, MS, RD, Health Professional Marketing Manager, Almond Board of California. "Now consumers will be able to more easily identify almonds in the supermarket as a heart-smart food, helping take the guess work out of shopping."

The wide availability and versatility of almonds make it easy for clients and patients to incorporate a heart-healthy choice into any meal or snack.

  • Whole almonds make a satisfying on-the-go snack
  • Sliced almonds top yogurt or oatmeal for added texture and crunch
  • Slivered almonds add texture to vegetables and salads
  • Crushed almonds make a flavorful crust for meats and seafood

Almonds recognized by the American Heart Association with signature 'Heart-Check'

Modesto, CA (February 21, 2011) The American Heart Association (AHA) recently certified almonds based on their nutrient profile to display the signature Heart-Check mark . PFT: Rice wants Peterson-type money

l343c32ce0000_1_4795

A week ago, ESPN dropped a bombshell on the football-watching world with the prodemotion of Ron Jaworski from Monday Night Football.

Jaworski has called it ?bittersweet,? Jon Gruden created the impression that he didn?t agree with the move, and Mike Tirico told Dan Patrick on Friday that Tirico was told the reason for the move but added, ?I?m not going to share that with everybody because that?s not everybody?s business.?

Jaworski also has addressed the situation on 97.5 The Fanatic with Mike Missanelli (via SportsRadioInterviews.com), once again calling it ?bittersweet.?? Jaworski also provides more on the basis for the move.

He starts off by explaining that the reasons are ?pure speculation based on what I?ve heard from our president, John Skipper, and [executive vice president] Norby Williamson and [executive vice president] John Wildhack.?

If so, that?s not speculation.? That?s fact.

?They just feel that a two-man booth was the way to go,? Jaworski said.? ?And obviously, I?m the odd man out.? I?m the 60-year-old guy and Jon?s the young guy that they believe is the future.? I?m not going to argue with that. . . .? I think what was crystal clear is they had great respect for me, incredible respect, which I truly appreciate. . . .? They put me in a position that is really, really good in giving me the platforms to develop some of my own programming to do some things that I?ve always wanted to do. And at the end of the day, they?re paying me a lot of money, so I can?t argue with any of that.?

It sounds like Jaworski believes ESPN selected Gruden over Jaworski based on age:? ?I?m the 60-year-old guy and Jon?s the young guy that they believe is the future.?

If anyone at ESPN actually told him that, ESPN has potential liability to Jaworski for age discrimination.

Of course, the fact that ESPN is paying Jaws a lot of money to continue working for ESPN goes a long way toward keeping him from filing suit.? Which, if Jaworski?s speculation is based on, you know, information that is true would have resulted in ESPN paying Jaws a lot of money to not work at ESPN.

Daniel Pargman's academic homepage: Beyond sports vs games

.

I attended the "Beyond sports vs games" workshop at the IT University of Copenhagen this week. The workshop was an attempt to get (sociology of) sports and computer games researchers to meet and discuss, but the sports researchers didn't show up.Knowing what I know about the organizer, T.L. Taylor (her new book is called "Raising the stakes: E-sports and the professionalization of computer gaming"), I thought the topic of the workshop would be competitive computer gaming and the "sportification" of computer games. My contribution was a "curveball" as it wasn't about competitive computer gaming, but about competitive programming (i.e. programming competitions) in relation to "electronic sports".

It turned out that my contribution was even more peripheral, as most of the participants were interested in sports computer games, i.e. for example (annually released - great for business!) football, american football and basketball computer games. The emphasis wasn't on "how computer games are turned into sports", but on "how sports are turned into videogames". Which is really really really big, but also situated straight in my dead angle. One of the papers we read in preparation for the workshop stated that:

"The sports gaming industry is the crown jewel of the video games world. It is a one billion dollar per year industry; sports games account for more than thirty percent of all video games sales."

I had no idea. To a large extent, we are talking about computer games for sports fans. I'm not a sports fan. Truth be told, I hardly play computer games anymore due to lack of time (except of course together with my children as a family activity).

----------

There were a couple of presentations (Olli Sotamaa and Abe Stein) about sports fandom and fantasy sport games, i.e. putting together you football "dream team" (with players from many different real-world teams) and competing against other teams based on how well "your" players are doing in their real-life games. I thus learned that there is a massive group of people who spend a humongous amounts of time in the sports fandom-sports television-sports computer games nexus, speculating about future games and also simulating and replaying different imaginary pasts ("who would have won in a boxing match between Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson?"). I like the term "imaginative labor" which was used, it's such a charming combination (contradiction?) of work and play. Even sportsmen have apparently been known to do it, playing "themselves" in computer games and trying out things in the computer game that they later bring with them to the real-world sports games. There were some interesting musings about how the "tribal" factor of sports is on the decline because of the ascent of fantasy sports games (which apparently is really big in the States). Your allegiance to your favorite team is weakened because you can also cheer for one (or several) players in the opposing team (because you've recruited them to your fantasy team). There were also plenty of references to the movie "Moneyball" (based on a book by one of my favorite journalists, Michael Lewis). To some sports fans, the focus has now shifted from the actual weekly games to the statistics that these games generate (and that is immediately inputted in to the fantasy league circus).

----------

Another interesting talk (by Chris Paul) was about how sports game revenue is changing from the game (a physical disc) to charging (also) for online access. The world's largest publisher, Electronic Arts (EA) is leading the way with their sports games. It's in the nature of things that last year's sports game is less interesting than this year's, but when the focus shifts to online, new ways of decreasing the value of the game you bought last year appear; when others fans/gamers shift to the new game, you're not where the action is anymore unless you too buy the game, and EA can find ways to further decrease the value of your "old" game, for example by not updating or supporting it - thereby implicitly forcing you to move on and buy (also) the latest annual ($60) edition of the game. My personal question was if/how the economic recession and youth unemployment has affected gaming revenues (youth - under 25 - unemployment in Greece and Spain is almost at 50% according to 3rd quarter 2011 Eurostat figures). Do people nowadays play more (since they have more time) or less (since they have less money)? More generally, is gaming (considered) expensive or inexpensive compared to other expenses? Is it recession-proof or does it suffer from harsh economic times? The answer was apparently that gaming has been perceived to be recession-proof - up until the most recent (2008-) recession. So, what would happen to the gaming industry if/when the economic cake doesn't grow anymore? How would a prolonged period of no/negative economic growth affect gaming and the gaming industry?

--------

Ren Reynolds' "Sports law and digital play" started from a perspective of sports law before moving to games. Sports have become an arena where some (violent) behaviors are OK/permitted - even though the same behaviors aren't OK in the rest of society, i.e. it is permitted to hit each other hard (in boxing) and hitting others is tolerated (in American ice hockey). In-between play and non-play (ordinary life) is a zone where "shit that goes down" happens (fighting in ice-hockey) and that the law (lawyers, judges, courts) nowadays stay away from. The question becomes if this is what is happening in gaming right now - despite long and complicated End User License Agreements (EULAs) that supposedly or purportedly regulates gaming (but is increasingly dismissed by courts when game-related cases arrive there).

----------

The two talks that were most interesting to me were two of the organizers' talks about pro-gaming and competitions, i.e. T.L. Taylor's talk about "institutional governance in e-sports" and Emma Witkowski's talk about "negotiations of hegemonic sporting masculinities at LANs".T.L. talked about the sometimes-fraught relationship between two very powerful actors (institutions) in the e-sports space; the influential game developer Blizzard and the Korean e-Sports Professional Association (KeSPA). They have very different views of authorship and ownership of "digital playing fields", so what happens when a "property" (a computer game) becomes an important cultural phenomenon (as Blizzard's "Starcraft" game is in Korea)?

Emma talked about what is and what isn't considered to be "real sporting skills" in e-sports, with plenty of references to non-gamer/athletic ideals and cultures. E-sports is a gendered space, rife with masculinity and sexism and where pro-gamers (and their fans) predominantly are young, white, straight, middle-class men. Emma's talked about a study of hers on how players from "the margins" (women, minorities, but primarily players of a marginalized game) navigate and rebel against these structures and practices.

----------

I should also write something about my own contribution to the workshop, "Programming competitions as (e-)sports", as well as an analysis of what I personally got out of the workshop and in relation to my study. I won't do that in this particular blog post though (it is long enough already). I might write a follow-up blog post where I summarize my thoughts as well as implications and decision related to my ongoing study in a week or two.
