Local soccer coach accused of molesting student

Jorge Muniz, 29 (El Paso Police Department)

El Paso police arrested an area soccer coach Thursday on a charge of being indecent with a 16-year-old girl who was one of his students.

Many parents and several of coach Jorge Mu?iz's students voiced their support for the coach, who once played for the El Paso Patriots.

Police said Mu?iz, 29, of Horizon City, turned himself in to police Thursday after learning he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a charge of indecency with a child.

Mu?iz owns Jorge Mu?iz Goalkeeper Academy and offers private soccer lessons to boys and girls. The alleged incident occurred in May.

Police said the victim had been taking soccer lessons from Mu?iz.

After his arrest, Mu?iz was booked into the El Paso County Jail. He posted $25,000 bond

early Friday morning and was released.

On Friday evening, Mu?iz and a group of parents were scheduled to meet at Hawkins Park, 1500 Hawkins, but Mu?iz left the meeting soon after he arrived when reporters showed up to get reactions from the parents.

Many parents said they were shocked at the allegation against Mu?iz, while other parents declined to speak to the reporters.

The El Paso Times featured Mu?iz, a former professional goalkeeper in Texas and Mexico and a native of Monterrey, Mexico, in a story Thursday about his academy. In the story, Mu?iz said 35 students between the ages of 6 and 20 are enrolled in the academy, which has been open for about a year.

Mu?iz's attorney, Joshua Spencer, called the allegation "100 percent not

true."

"It's just outrageous," Spencer said Friday. "He's an outstanding member of his community and an exemplary athlete who coaches kids and has been very successful at that."

Spencer said that so far, neither he nor Mu?iz knows the details of the allegation or which student accused him. Mu?iz has yet to be indicted.

"Indecency with a child -- that can be almost anything," Spencer said. "Until we have an indictment, we don't know exactly what the allegation is."

One of Mu?iz's close friends, Alejandro Martin Del Campo, attended Friday's parents meeting and defended Mu?iz, whom he described as a strong person and a family man with two children of his own. Del Campo also said Mu?iz cares for Del Campo's 4-year-old daughter.

"There is a reason why he turned himself in," Del Campo said but declined to elaborate. "From my understanding, he will be cleared."

Police think that, because of Mu?iz's access to children, there may be other victims. Anyone who may be a victim is asked to call police at 832-4400.
